    The Devil's Advocate Section

    I have an interesting idea...

    The Devils Advocate
    Forum Section
I think the forum should add a section where people debate for the side of an argument that they are opposed to. For example...in this section, there could be a thread debating the existence of god. Christians would argue that god doesn't exist, and atheists would argue for the existence of god. I think this could potentially be one of the most interesting sections of the forum.

In that case, I am for it.

    It's under consideration.

Great idea! Even debating against/or for both sides...

Any suggestions on how we'd enforce the ground rules? I don't think it's realistic to expect moderators to check that everyone is posting the opposite of their true beliefs. Any thoughts on how to ensure everyone plays fair?

May I play devils advocate here and say “there shouldn’t be any rules”. No enforcement, no pepper spays!

Couldn’t the member start there post with something like: I believe in God but…or, I don’t believe in God but… something like that? The bottom line is they’re trying to strengthen their true position anyway and observant people will realize it soon enough. I like the idea. What or Who will someone hurt if they “don’t play fair”? Posting a thread in the forum will be the hard thing for most and will be enjoyable just for that factor.

Well, you and I probably would say, "no one". But we do get complaints when one member sets ground rules for a thread or debate and others ignore those ground rules. Since posting from the other point of view is being suggested as a ground rule I just want to be sure that either everyone understands that as ground rule for participating in the thread or doesn't mind that there will be some who don't get it and post their true opinions. I don't care either way, I only wanted to toss out that concept and see what others thought.

There was a talk forum I stumbled upon a few months back that had a forum labelled "Basement" where there were no rules. A sort of debate version of "Fight Club."

I understand Jack, and I’m sure this type forum will need good ground rules. No matter how well thought out ground rules you all will come up with there will be those who don’t read them and will end up posting their true opinions. Either way….they’ll end up debating and that’s what Volconvo is all about, while sooner then later they’ll catch on, or, should.

I think only the normal forum rules should apply here. No need to make sure they really are playing the devil's advocate, we will trust them to do that themselves. I'm sure it will be quite obvious to everyone why isn't playing along anyways.

I think the more important thing for the admins to think about is how to make it very obvious that they are posting in the devil's advocate section?

All in all these are all minor issues and I really hope it gets implemented.
