if you double post, it's better for the user to just delete it rather then putting a [delete this] as an edit.

The system doesn't allow for double posts, to my knowledge.
In order to ensure members can't edit/delete old posts to change their arguments within a debate, or tell mods "I never said that!" these features have been disabled after a certain time period.

I've said more stuff at 3 am that I've wanted to tone down when I got up than I would have liked to. I sorely wish I had a button that would replace an especially dumb post with the message *stupidity redacted*. The redaction button would also archive it for the reasons Jason mentioned.
The more you complain, the less I care about your problems.
