    Michael Vick for NFL MVP?

NO imo! I don't think I'll ever get passed how he abused dogs. And you have to wonder if he never got caught would he still be dog fighting? I think so.

After starting the season as the second-team quarterback, Vick took over for an injured Kevin Kolb and didn’t look back. At times, he has played more spectacularly than he did for...

Couldn't the argument be made that he would be being rewarded for his performance as a football player and not for his personal character? Do his football skills make his entire life commendable? Are parents at fault for allowing their children to look up to sporting figures as role models?

Its not only parents though, as a society we pay sports stars far too much money.

Although there are a lot of sports stars who are in fact good role models, who donate a lot of time, money and items to charity.

To answer the point about his personal character, if the NFL (or whoever) do reward him for his handegg skills, then the league will be seen as condoning his actions, even though they re not, its all about perception.

@ Jack. I suppose it depends on how you would define "role model". Looking at professional "artists" as role models and respecting their art in general are two very different things. A role model IMHO (a person used as a reference to model one's OWN life) should always be analysed both personally as well as professionally.

On another note, I imagine that you and many others wouldn't be equally as willing to take his personal life out of the equation if his crime was one of violence toward humans. Actually, both of our opinions wouldn't matter because in many cases said acts of violence would make an athlete ineligible for such rewards.

Severe acts of violence such as sadism (which his dog fighting was) torward humans is not looked at as a mere character flaw and understandably limits the scope of what is owed to you. Regardless if this is just or not I personally think it is insulting and unjust that his dog fighting is often regarded otherwise.

This article might be of interest to you Sismar and anyone else that condemns this man's dog fighting for that matter:

Francione: We're all Michael Vick | Philadelphia Daily News | 08/14/2009

In a conversation yesterday, someone said to me, “how am I ever going to watch an Eagles game and see that guy without thinking about those dogs?”

My response: “How can you enjoy an Eagles game while you’re eating a hamburger or a hot dog made from animals who had a life and death every bit as horrible and unnecessary as Vick’s dogs?"

He did not have an answer.

Vick deserves the MVP because he is currently the best player in American football (hence, the "most valuable"). But if you want to enter his rap sheet into the mix, then in all fairness you must consider his work to atone for his crimes.

One of Vick's most vocal critics, the American Humane Society, now praises the man. Vick has helped young people around the nation by volunteering time and money to the AHS anti-dog fighting campaign. He has fulfilled every part of his probation requirements. Vick did this while rehabilitating his own career in spectacular fashion.

I love dogs. I do not like Michael Vick. But Michael Vick and anyone else convicted of a crime can not be expected to ever change or re-enter society responsibly if they are forever punished for their crimes. He did his time. He has done what has been asked of him and if he gets the MVP, he gets it for what he has done, reasonably and respectably, on the football field. I still don't like him, would never buy a jersey with his name on it, but I would not begrudge him what he has rightfully earned in his profession.

Interesting coming from someone who lives in Boston. Vick has had a great season but Tom Brady should be the MVP this season. His numbers are ridiculous.

Tom Brady may indeed win the MVP, but I like Vick for the following reasons:

    • Vick averages more total yards per game than Brady (305 to 255).
    • Vick averages more touchdowns per game (2.5 to 2.3)
    • In a game he's started and finished, Vick has had 250 total yards or more in nine of nine games while Brady has had 250+ total yards in only four out of 11 games he's played.
    • M. Vick has only 4 less touchdowns and 210 less yards than Brady in 4 less games played
    • Vick became the first player in NFL history to throw for more than 300 yards, rush for more than 50 yards, throw four touchdown passes and rush for two touchdowns in one game
    • I'm more surprised (and impressed) by Vick leading the Eagles to the Division title versus Brady leading the Pats to the division title. Of the two QBs, Vick is the most valuable to his team's success.
