| Igneous Magma Posts: 349 | Sports teams names Do you think that sports teams should have names like the redskins or the braves? why or why not I believe they shouldnt because it is helping sterotypes about indians and if sports are part of are culture we shouldnt have a culture premoting sterotypes. I already come as close to this as possible: I'm a Boston Celtics fan. Heh. "Would you like some pie, Dr. Stark?" "Science is my pie. Curiosity, my sweet tooth. Knowledge is my candy." |

![]() Juris Doctor Location: Brockport, NY Posts: 2,166 | 1) there is a difference between "Redskins" and "Braves". Redskins is derogatory. I have no clue why naming a team Braves, Chiefs, or any other respectful team is harmful. 2) Other races/groups besides Native Americans are harmed by stereotypes created by sports teams... Notre Dame being a good example. The "Fighting Irish" with a stereotypical logo of a little Irish guy with his fists up... implying that Irish people are a bunch of bar brawlers. Why is there no drive to change this name? Would it be acceptable to call a team the "Cheap Jews" or the "WOPish Italians"? My point is that no matter what you say/do, people will be offended. Private companies should be allowed to name themselves anything they want. If you're native american and offended by Indian names of teams, don't buy any of their merchandise. The market will decide if such names are acceptable. "But it wasn't until he met his beautiful wife that he learned using logic and reason isn't enough. I was trying to make it look like I was offended that you would put me in your list of White supremacists, but then was really just pissed because I don't like football. Get it? Hahahahahhaa I am so clever. -wipes tear from eye- So anywaste, Walmas, if you can say White men can't jump, then I can say Black men can't enunciate. Werd dawg. |

It would be great for the Socceroos to win - can you imagine the headlines, with the Brits succumbing to the Socerroos. Great huh. Live Long and Prosper (Genetics and Capitalism) |

As for other 'sporting names', some of the rugby team names (both here in England and in the southern hemisphere) are quite entertaining. My local team, London Irish, are commonly referred to as the 'Exiles'. NZ have a team called Waikato Chiefs in reference to the area being a big centre of Maori culture. I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered. -George Best, on being asked what he did with his footballing fortunes.

| trendsetter Location: cleveland Posts: 317 | Ugh... I hate when people whine about the names of sports teams. I remember when there was a significant uprising against the Cleveland Indians and their mascot Chief Wahoo. People thought it was offensive and degrading... I say why? Every other street in the suburbs surrounding Cleveland is named after an indian tribe or chief. Is that offensive? |

But names after actual tribes aren't that bad.
