Should the drinking age be changed from 21 to 18?

Of course, being a college student, this law comes up (is broken) a lot. While I am old enough to marry, go to war (but women going to war is a whole new topic...), and win the lotto, shouldn't I be old enough to enjoy some iced tea from long island? But then again, being a mere 18 years of age, aren't I more likely to become a pre-prom scare statistic?

Have at it!

Hell yeah!
We need more drunk drivers on the road.
Especially 18 year olds, who have little experience behind the wheel as it is.
Don't worry...the drunk usually survives, the sober, innocent people die.
Party on!

(I know I sound like a prick. But teens don't appreciate that we who have been teens remember what we were thinking then, and what we've learned since then.)

Yes, it does. Older people tend to be a little smarter than to drive drunk, kids think they're awesome and can do anything. An adult that drives drunk has also driven AND drank for so many years they tend to be better at it. Not to condone it; I don't.

And nice double post.

no, i think the drinking age is fine the way it is. I'm 21 yet, doesnt mean that i didnt go out and get trashed last night. And i'm not sure if this is fact, but i heard one of the reasons that the drinking age is 21, is because your brain is not fully developed until your 21, but like i said i dont know that for sure. I heard it from a very intellegent friend of mine though, so odds are it is true.

if you're drunk you're not exactly thinking intelligently, no matter how old you are. and its not a matter of who can drink and drive better its a matter of sorting out our priorities...if i can be trained to kill a man with my bare hands at 18, why wait til im 21 to have a drink.

now if your argument is that i'll just be killing someone with my car because i will inevitably drive after drinking, i say i could've just killed you 3 years earlier...sober. so if a death or deaths are going to occur regardless of my age, why not just let it all happen at one age? 18 since i can do everything else on my own as an adult. which brings me to my next point, should i drink and drive, and fatalities occur, i would still be tried as an adult. so again, what's the difference if im 18 or 21?

(i actually wish you no bodily harm, i promise.lol)

Explain this and compare the drinking age with the drinking age in Europe. Are you suggesting AMERICAN kids think they can do anything they want?

Yes, because everything people say automatically makes it true. I think it should be lowered back to 18. I see no reason why I can go buy a pack of cigarettes, die serving my country, and am allowed to vote but I can't consume or buy alcohol. It makes no sense. Just because some 18 year old fucked up and drove while drunk, doesn't mean everyone else should have to suffer.

Yes, you're really suffering because you're not allowed to get wasted and spend the night puking and the next day with a migraine. Poor you.

You missed that I mentioned we'd been there. In the 70's I could, and nearly was, drafted, but I couldn't drink. Exact same situation.
I know drinking has become a right of passage. I understand that being able to drink adds to the illusion that you're an adult (is anyone, ever?).
But it's really nothing to get envious of. You'll discover that for yourselves one day. In the meantime, enjoy your pristine bodies. It's all downhill from 21.

Don't I know it. I feel like I die just a little more each day with nothing to show for it. Heh.

Why stop at eighteen? Why not drop the legal age to drink alcohol even further?

In any state where you may marry without parental permission at a certain age, you should also get a chance to buy juice.

Not until I get drunk and find some cute 16 year old, get them drunk and marry 'em.

I think the drinking age should stay at 21 with the exception of military personnel, they (with valid military ID) should be able to drink.

Why is that?
