I'm sorry, but I strongly disagree. Prostitution should not be legalized because of the fact that it is immoral and the spread of disease like HIV/AIDS would be more prevalent. Yes, I know people still will make their decision and pay for prostitutes but does it make it okay? No! It doesn't because prostitution promotes the spread of sexual transmitted diseases and making it legal would only increase this.

I think prostitution should remain illegal. If an individual wants to play a part in prostitution than they should move to Nevada or consider escorting. As someone posted, I too have seen many people who have been murdered due to prostitution. We also have to consider the young girls who are being pimped and they get can’t way from their pimp. If we legalized prostitution than we are providing a situation that young girls can take apart of. Although many people have freedom of speech and America is free country but we also have to protect our citizens.

If prostitution was made legal there would be an increase in people wanting to do it yes. But this wouldnt last forever. Everyone would want to fill their urges but once their gone prostitution and all tese other crimes would start to decrease. I dont agree with prostitution but it has helped in some coutries that have legalized it. Its illegal now but you can always find a prostitute. Once its legalized many more people would start this buisness and the econom could better itself because people would be using money they werent using before.

Morality I can respect. Your misinformed reason that you cite above is simply not true. Here is a dose of reality. Facts, minus the emotion.

It matters little that scientific data do NOT support the common belief that sex workers are major contributors of sexually transmitted infections in the USA. The Centers for Disease Control have conducted several tests for HIV seropositivity in prostitutes and consistently conclude "risk factors for AIDS in female prostitutes may be similar to those in other women living in these [tested] geographic areas." (3) In other words, although the US government would love to prove otherwise, US prostitutes spread no more disease than US housewives and college girls. Some evidence even supports the contention that the presence of prostitutes DECREASES the incidence of STIs as Rita Brock and Susan Thistlethwaite point out in their book, Casting Stones: “When the Chicken Ranch, the famous Texas brothel, was closed, the number of gonorrhea cases in the general population rose substantially. Venereal disease also rose substantially when brothels were closed from 1917 to 1920. U.S Department of Public Health statistics have been consistently reporting that only 5 percent of sexually transmitted disease in the United States is related to prostitution, compared to 30 to 35 percent that is transmitted among sexually active teenagers. . . . The National Research Council notes: 'Many people fear that prostitutes (who by definition have multiple sex partners) will not adopt safer sex practices with their clients and will therefore be the conduit through which HIV infection will spread to the heterosexual population. Yet existing data on prostitutes do not support this concern.

Interesting. Can you name some of these people???

Did you ever stop to think that legalized prostitution creates a safer enviornment for them to work in? It also creates an enviornment that is regulated and controlled in approved brothels?

Your emotional feelings are once again supporting baseless facts. When prostituion is legal, the prostitutes don't need a pimp. They participate in government approved houses that are inspected and are safer than being pimped by some gangsta wanna be rapper.

You reallly need to get some intelligent and accurate information before you decide to advocate a position on this issue from a emotionally charged frame of mind.

The benifits woudl be:
1) Elimination of illegal activity such as child prostitution, "white slavery" and control of the sex industry by organized crime syndicates.
2) Better control of Venerial Diseases, HIV, Genetal Herpes, Syphilis etc.
3) Increase the Tax base.
4) A descrease in sex crimes.

Keep in mind that in most of Europe and Asia, legalized but carefully regulated prostitution has been a success.[/quote]

Street prostitution should be illegal but brothels should be legal. The brothel can control whether the women is safe or not through surveillance. The government can collect taxes on brothels. Women should be checked for STD’s at least on a monthly basis. Street prostitution should continue illegal, because this is where sex crimes occur. Rapes will decrease because men will no longer feel that this is the only way they can have sex. If prostitution is done in an organized way it can be beneficial for the economy and tourism.

Women want prostitution to remain illegal because that means men will be more dependent on them. Have to take them on dates, spend money on them, etc. before the girls put out. Prostitution = male freedom.

Haven't we learned from Prohibition in the 1920s?

Making alcohol illegal didn't prevent alcohol from being sold - in fact, consumption increased after the first couple of years of Prohibition. Plus, it made it impossible to regulate the quality of alcohol being sold. More deaths from drinking alcohol occured, and crime increased.

Like what John said, legalized prostitution will allow prostitution to occur in a safer environment, with bouncers, security guards/cameras, the whole deal, allowing women to participate in prostitution without many of the currently associated risks.

All prostitution should be legal, regardless of whether it is on the streets or in a brothel. Sure, it's loads safer in a brothel, but if a woman wants to do that with her body, she should have the freedom to do so. Anyway, this is just principle, because if prostitution was legal, a woman would obviously prefer a brothel.

QUOTE=indierockboy;1460 prostitution is illegal for many reasons.

1)there is no such thing as perfect protection. a condom can break. a pill can fail. spermicides do not always work. there is no way to guarantee against pregnancy or stds.
True to some degree, but condoms are highly reliable in stopping the spread of HIV. With legalized prostitution, the prostitutes could be forced to take month HIV tests. That in itself would slow the spread of disease.

2)legalizing prostitution would not eliminate child prostitution, or "white slavery", or anything of the sort. that's like saying legalization of marijuana would eliminate the sale of heroin.
Legalizing marijuana would eliminate the illegal sale of marijuana, just like legalizing herion would eliminate the illegal sale of herion. Legalizing prostitution would eliminate the force prostitution, hence white slavery.

Quote:
3)sex crimes would not decrease in the slightest, except for the crime of prostitution. rape of prostitutes would increase with their availability. same with their murder.
This is moot when discussing legalized prostitution.

There is also a better way to make a living then coal mining, that doesn't mean we should outlaw coal mining.

Prostitutioin should be legal, in any free nation, but pimping or making people into sex slaves should still be a felony.

if i may, my two cents...

about std's-
there is no absolute way to know if a prostitute has an std or not. even if a doctor ran a series of tests immediately after every sexual encounter a prostitute
had, there is always a chance the test could generate a false negative- in other words, the prostitute in question really has an std but it doesn't show up on the test.

Doctror's aren't God. And their procedures aren't perfect. Sex is dangerous. Period. Having sex with someone, i don't care who it is, is always a risk.

I think it would be pretty ridiculous to legalize prostitution. The whole concept of prostitution is just plain disgusting in my opinion. Our country has a serious problem when it comes to morality. We are becoming increasingly more immoral and it has to stop. If this morality problem continues, we will end up just like the Roman Empire, and collapse.

Dear me someone's had their brain washed this week. Sex with anyone cleared by a doctor is less risky than someone not cleared by a doctor, prostitute, porn star or anyone irrespectively.

And sex is not dangerous unless you consider minor risks dangerous. I walk across roads every day and they are much more dangerous than having sex. Your exaggerations and paranoid attitude are ridiculous.

And republicantiger, if you know your history it was when Christianity and it's morality became the big thing in Rome that the empire hit the skids.

Dear Paper Tiger,

"Disgusting" and "opinion" are acceptable terms when discussing your like or dislikes of, say, strawberries. I'm not so childish, however, to assume that my petty likes and dislikes should be forced upon others.

Hands off my penis. Well, unless . . .

I believe prostitution should be legalized in every state. Currently prostitution is only legal in the state of Nevada. It has been legal to operate a brothel in Nevada since 1970; despite the efforts of politicians this continues to be the law. It is legal to operate a brothel in a county with a population of 400,000 people or less. I feel that it should be legalized with restrictions similar to the restrictions in Nevada. I don’t think that a county with a low population should have brothels. A larger county would benefit more from brothels as well as keeping small towns “clean.” Prostitution should be legal within a brothel. I feel that street prostitution should continue to be illegal. Prostitutes should be a minimum of 18 years of age.
There are far more reasons why it should be legalized than why it shouldn’t. Most people do not agree with the legalization of prostitution before getting some convincing. It is believed that unwanted births will increase. Unwanted births will not increase within prostitution; they can be prevented with birth control. I believe that unwanted births can be controlled with the use of condoms, birth control pills and spermicides. Another option for controlling the increase of birth rate is abortion. Most may not agree with this option, but it is still an option. It is also believed that sex crimes will increase. Sex crimes will not increase; prostitutes can be monitored by surveillance cameras to keep them safe. Rapes in a brothel can be prevented by employing bouncers or security guards to help maintain a safe environment in the brothel. I feel that sex crimes will decrease. If prostitutes are employed be brothel there will no longer by rapes on the street or beatings by pimps. Also, law enforcement can concentrate their efforts towards other crimes: the sale of drugs, rapes, murder and the prostitution of children, known as white slavery. The strongest point that persons opposed to legalizing prostitution is that it is immoral and a sin. Some believe that prostitution is demeaning to women. This may or may not be true, but isn’t a women’s right to decide whether it is demeaning to her? By keeping prostitution illegal we are not protecting women from anything. In fact, we are endangering women more by not providing a safe haven for them. People may debate that it is morally wrong to sell your body. However, I feel it is up to the individual to make the choice whether something is morally wrong or right. If the individual is living in “sin” then their actions will be punished later and it is their choice to decide this not others.
There are many reasons why prostitution should be legalized. Street and child prostitution will decrease. Prostitution can benefit the economy. Tourism, where brothels are available, will increase. Believe it or not it can improve home life by decreasing the divorce rate. Spreading STDs within prostitution can be controlled better. Many may disagree with my views, but here is my opportunity to change minds.
Street and child prostitution will decrease. Employment can be offered to prostitutes who qualify-- age minimum of 18, and healthy with no STDs. This will aid in clearing the streets of prostitution. The prostitution of children may increase due to the fact that they will not be hired at brothels. In spite of this I don’t think that it will get out of hand. While law enforcement will no longer have street prostitution to deal with they can concentrate on the prostitution of children.
Prostitution can improve the economy of the United States. The government can tax this public service. According to the IRS the prostitution industry collects $14.4 billion in unreported income a year. If prostitution were nationwide and taxed, the economy of the US will improve. Many people think that a common whorehouse can not have any sort of positive effect on the government, but it most certainly can.
As well as the economy, prostitution can improve tourism. Tourism will boom with the location of brothels in highly touristic areas, i.e. South Beach, Manhattan, and Hollywood. Many travel from California to Nevada, in order to receive the services of legal brothels. Think of what it can do for international tourism. Most initial visits will be for the beaches or the food or the entertainment, but they’ll return again for the brothels.
Legalizing prostitution can reduce divorce rate. Spouses tend to cheat for sex, not relationships. Sex without relationship is not commonly offered. A relationship outside of the marriage is what tends to end the marriage. If a local brothel is available then the spouse can go get what they “need” and go home to their spouse. Granted, the infidelity may still end the marriage but it is much simpler to hide one lie and a one time event than a web of lies and a series of events. This may sound absurd but it is definitely reasonable.
Some may say the STDs will spread at a higher rate with the legalization of prostitution. The spreading of STDs will not increase, they will decrease. Prostitutes should be tested for STDs. At brothels like The Moonlight Bunny Ranch, in the state of Nevada, testing for STDs is mandatory. The state of Nevada mandates that sex workers must be tested for gonorrhea, genital warts and herpes on a weekly basis. They must also be tested monthly for syphilis and HIV. As of March of 1988 the use of condoms is mandatory for not only vaginal intercourse but oral sex and manual sex as well. By having prostitutes work within a legal brothel we can control the spreading of STDs. Since 1970, when prostitution was legalized in Nevada, there has been no reported transmission of disease.
In conclusion, I feel that the right to choose what one does with his or her body is up to the individual. They know what the consequences are. If they still decide to go through with it is their right. You may not agree with my views, but I hope that this enlightens you. I hope that all of us will begin to accept a person’s decision to do with their lives what they will.

Make prostitution legal.

end of story.

Women (or men) should have the right to do anything with their body.
It's theres. You can't tell them that they can't have sex with this person for money.

Because chances are, they're going to anyway.

Might as well make it legal.
