Son and Ex Mum-in-law Hope to Wed

A man and his former mother-in-law have told how they hope to marry after the UK's ban on such unions was challenged in a European court.

Clive Blunden, 50, from Warrington, Cheshire, said it would be "fantastic" if he could wed Brenda, 62, his ex-wife's mother.

The European Court of Human Rights earlier this month ruled the ban on marriage between people who were in-laws was a breach of human rights.

The decision came in a case brought by a man and his daughter-in-law.

Coincidentally, that couple were also from Warrington.

Comments, anyone?

Don't care. I think we stick our noses into other's affairs far too much as it is.

Do I approve? Not really, but if society went around banning everything people don't approve we might as well all commit suicide... wait, that would be wrong too... damn, see what you've done? I'm stuck in a loop...

It makes no sense at all to have a law against this. These people aren't related, by blood or anything else. It sounds a little strange but so what, and those ages mentioned are odd. A 12 year difference in age (My Mother in Law is about 26 years older than I am) sounds like this guy was robbing the cradle when he got married to the daughter.

But again, so what. And how is this BBC material?

They're both adults. As was already said, it's a little strange, but to each his own.

I agree. While it is very strange (stranger still that he's marrying an older woman, that doesn't happen often), I say it's their business and they should be able to do what they want. Them marrying doesn't hurt anyone in the least.

I agree that banning such marriage is unnecessary meddling, but by my definition I don't think it rises to the level of a "breach of human rights". Does anybody know how the European Court defines such rights?

If there is a right to marry in the first place (under any other circumstances), and the marriage is not a health or safety concern to others then forbidding such a marriage IS a breach of fundamental rights. These are two people WAY past the age of consent and there are no concerns regarding inbreeding so no one should be able to say boo to these people.

It's really a non-issue, which was why I find it very surprising that such a law exists at all. I would like to know the rationale behind the drafting of this law originally..

Seeems like Jerry-Springer driven legislation.
