If you start raving over a post involving vending machines, please excuse me for assuming that you were upset about vending machines.

I say:
Once again, I didn't fault you for accusing me of being upset about vending machines. I faulted you for accusing me of being ONLY angry about vending machines. You assumed I was more concerned over vending machines, than curriculum, and quite incorrectly I might add.

You are just upset because I give as well as I take, and you don't like taking it while you LOVE to give it out. You do not read and comprehend well. All I said was admit your ASSUMING was wrong, and move on. Obviously you don't like to admit being wrong.

Ricksp said:
And yes, I read what you wrote, which is typically incomprehensible, except perhaps to you.

I say:
That is quite funny, because I not only graduated, but scored well in all of my English and Composition classes since grade school. I have published poetry, as well as written many short stories. I have had my papers read by lawyers as well as historians, with no apparent problems with interpretation or comprehension. I do make some grammatical errors occasionally, as well as mis-spell occasionally due to typing errors, but I fail to see your point in regards to my posts, as well as many others I am sure could attest.

Ricksp said:
You really need to get focussed or your meds in balance or something.

I say:
Nice, really nice Rick.

Ricksp said:
And stop shouting. It is noisy enough in here already.

I say:
It's the voices Rick and only you can quiet the voices in your head, or you have a CD playing in the background. This is a message forum, specializing in the written word.

Os, I love you, but you are flipping. The topic is vending machines.

Rick, no need for insults.

I think the vending machines should go, but it won't do any good unless only nutritious food is served in the cafeteria.

I used to get a snickers and a coke to save my lunch money up for Guess jeans that my father wouldn't pay $80 for - that's a lot of missed lunches.

But I could have bought fries and a sugary drink in the cafateria, so what's the diff?

Plus, seniors could go off campus in my day, and freshman and sophomores could hide in the trunk.

Now they have McDonalds, Taco Bell, etc. right in many of the schools! Crazy.

No pudding until they eat their meat, that's what I say ;-)

Edited the thread title....ibm, thread titles really should reflect what you're trying to debate on, not just 'omg'.

I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.

I'd rather them regulate it than have the tax payers have to pick up the medical bill for the treatment of diabetes, heart disease, and all the other problems that can come from obesity.
Sorry to go back on topic here but .... Great point, well made - THAT is exactly why they are doing it. I read somewhere recently (will try to find a link) that after an accident on a pleasureboat in Florida the court returned a recommendation that because of the increased occurrence of obesity in US citizens, the legal minimum size for a 'seat' would be increased by 4 inches to prevent this kind of thing happening again!

Related - it is illegal to NOT wear a seatbelt in the UK. When it was first brought in there were hissy fits from everyone about the infringement on their liberties and that the government was acting in loco parentis or 'in place of the parents'. What the government argued was that if someone is too dumb to realise that NOT wearing a seatbelt is dangerous then they'd have to make it illegal. I guess you could say it was an infringement of liberties, but it reduced the number of people killed and seriously injured in road accidents and eventually everyone agreed that although they still didn't like the way it was implemented it was actually a good idea. Now everyone wears seatbelts.

Applying the same model to the argument that junk food is real bad for you if you eat it ALL the time, the Cal state government has decided that if people are too dumb or lazy to NOT eat junk food at every meal that THEY will ensure that growing kids who need a balanced diet get a chance to have one even if their fat-ass parents can't be bothered to roll off their lethargic asses and make 'em something healthy to eat.

Bizarrely enough there is a current public outcry in the UK over the poor standard of food in our schools and a call by PARENTS to the government to ban all junk food in school. I guess we're only so bothered about it because we pay taxes to fund the FREE health service and healthy people are sick of paying for unclogging arteries, heart bypasses and diabetes treatment for people who just don't know how to look after themselves - or should we just give in to our kids when they stand in the middle of the store screaming wanna twinkie, wanna twinkie I WANNA TWINKIE' jeez!

Our schools aren't teaching. Our kids are falling farther and farther behind and you are upset about vending machines and school lunches?
Maybe you should look at the research that suggests that kids eating fatty preservative laden E numbers find it hard to concentrate and get poorer grades in school .... ?

Oh and finally

Maybe you should pay sufficient attention to see that I was arguing against vending machines in schools (or at least arguing against those who think that the state removing vending machines is somehow an attack our fundamental rights.)

never believed it when friends suggested this could actually happen. and it has happened! what are you thinking and doing over there, californians? is it a coincident that you elected a clown body-builder your ruler?

Seriously though, there is only one possible outcome of this new law: California schools will now take in drastically less income from vending machines and ala carte lunch lines as the demand for nutrional foods is near zero.

Yeah and the demand for broccoli and other green stuff was near zero at my parents dinner table. It didn't matter much and it won't in this case either.

Except that at your dinner table you had no choice where as here there is a choice.

Not really, the choices are the same. Eat what the school allows or don't because the school has a legitimate authority to decide what can and can't be eaten on campus or off-campus as a condition of school attendance. If you disagree with the school policy, try to change it. If they won't, either find somewhere else to go to school or conform to the rules.

That's not what I meant.

The students have a choice to simply not eat anything where as you probably did not.

I asked someone else already but they didn't answer. What proof is out there that schools make the profit on the vending machines? Unless they owned the vending machines themselves, I just can't see how a vending company would hand over its profits to the school.

Hmm, well I did have the choice of not eating, but I don't disagree with your point. I think where we are disagreeing is that you see the price paid for food and beverages as financially important to the school whereas I believe more of the funding for schools (and school lunches) comes from federal or other tax funded sources so this consideration is largely irrelevant.

That's true I guess.

I suppose I should've just said "someone is going to lose out on a lot of profit".

Unless I am greatly mistaken the schools are essentailly paid rent by the vending machine companies for allowing their machines in the schools. The schools may lose some income but it can't make a huge difference in the school budget.

Maybe some schools use vending machines that the schools own, then I can see a profit. But I doubt this is the case in most schools.

Yeah I was thinking about that as well. Maybe I should go into the vending machine business.
