![]() Iconoclast Posts: 5,077 | Liberty A great sign of the troubles of our times is the heading of this forum. There are not social rights without duties. Our liberty was not the liberty to do as we please whenever and wherever we want. That would be immoral. Moral meaning to understand the laws of the universe and what works and what doesn't. It was a Greek word meaning to understand those laws and good manners. Good manners are far more important to our liberty than laws. What has corrupted our government so badly today is, we have throw away good manners. We have disenfranchized citizens from the process of governing, and turned reprsentative government into citizens being subjects of the state. This would not be the case if we remember the meaning and importance of good manners and insisted on good manners! Our youngs' understanding of the American liberty and freedom is the result of dropping education for citizenship and preparing everyone to be disposable and enterchangeable products for industry. The immorality expressed by some people in these forums is shocking. Unfortunately, Christianity, does not give us the morality essential to democracy and liberty. In fact, it gives us a belief in an all powerful God, and a relationship to that God, that is not compatible with democracy, which must have a God of reason. The arbitary, self interested, human God, just isn't superior to the God of reason that enabled us to greatly increase the years we life with good science. Precisely, because we stopped preparing our young for good citizenship, and left moral training the church, we have a national moral crisis, that not only threatens our liberty, but also has caused many Muslims to see the US as immora,l and therefore, the justified target of terrorist. We could end this conflict with Muslims by remembering the morality that goes with our liberty, and the God of reason, democracy must have. We could start by changing the heading of this forum to include duty with rights. Last edited by Athena; Aug 29, 2005 at 03:02 pm. |
