| Molten Ash Location: NYC area Posts: 95 | Political Correctness is Wrecking US and Canada Does anyone remember a time when small and few words did the job of describing a situation or person accurately? Words like "idiot", "moron", "imbecile", or "lunatic"? Simple English words, that were used popularly and were part of legislation. The words had commonly understood meaning. Words like "mentally retarded" or "manic-depressive" were not verbotten. Airlines and police forces could develop psychological and personal profiles of actual or likely criminals, so that little old Jewish ladies from Pump Hill or Thornhill weren't being strip-searched at airports. Pedophiles were often harassed by police, so they kept their sexual urges and offensive conduct to themselves. Now the age of "liberation", "awareness" and "love" are upon us, little abated since the days of hippydome. We use indecipherable, "non-judgmental" terms like "intellectually challenged", or "emotionally challenged" or worse yet, use beaurocrateze to describe people. Thus, even figuring out what someone's real problem is, and addressing it, is hard. We are forced to endure endless, sterile debates about whether homosexuality is pathological or normal behavior. Some suggests that if a gay person wants to go "straight", a psychiatrist should refuse to "treat" the person for "gayness" notwithstanding the loss of oopportunities that a gay person suffers. He will never have biological children. His parents will never have grandchildren. There are victims here. Heaven forefend, we can't "profile", since that would be "stereotyping" and "degrading" a person because of their origin. We have to pretend that the Bronfmans of Montreal are as likely to blow up a synagogue or a transit conveyance as Abdul or Mohamed. This has real and deadly consequences as police resources are squandered searching harmless people, and ordinary people are badly inconvenienced in their daily life by pointless searches and checkpoints. this undermines public support for real measures that do improve security. And pedophiles now get a free pass since homsexual people are "entititled" to their "pride" and "dignity". The possibility of my 9 1/2 year old or 8 year old being diddled by some strange man strikes me as more serious that the "pride" or "dignity" of the gay community. Harper loses an election for Canadian PM in part because he honestly states the obvious, that the Liberals have not been aggressive about kiddie porn. Something has to give. |

Gays are vicitimized by people who have the attitude you seem to have espoused. >>"... the Bronfmans of Montreal ..."<< Just curious. Why are the Jewish people who are about to board a plane less likely to kill its passengers? They could well be hard core Sharon followers for all we know! Practically, I don't see people getting sued for calling the local evangelist a "religious nut". Comedies aimed at the black community which obviously portray the one white character as some kind of moron, nerd, or sychophant have not, to my knowledge, been antagonised as being "not pc". I am sure, however, that if the color scheme were reversed, that particular show would never make it on the air. Profiling is considered wrong and unamerican when used to try to catch potential terrorists. Who says Muslim extremists are Muslim, right? I only wish that our college admissions process was as colorblind as our airport security! Apparently, there are some cases in which profiling is actually very desirable. It seems certain of our number are indeed allowed to have their cake and eat it too. Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. -- Song 8:6 |

Democracy asks that the minority suffer for the good of the majority, while political correctness asks the the majority suffer for the good of the minority? How can one possibly embrace both ideologies? Yet many Liberals must hold both views, because these are the people who brought us political correctness in the first place. I believe it is another conscience, deliberate attack on the principles this country was founded on. |

The moment society started reacting to "offended" people instead of saying "Sorry kid, grow up" is when things took a turn for the worst. I have a theory, about PC. See, I think the kids that were beat up all the time, not liked, and didn't get along well started this PC bullshit. It empowered them, since they cannot deal with life, they made life miserable for all. I could of course, just be overly cynical, but that's that. Einstein's "Theory of Relativity" is still being challenged to this day, but by consensus Global Warming is a fact... that's REAL science at work, why didn't Albert just go that route? |

| Sedimentary Rock Posts: 17 | Political Correctness Gone Mad by fromtheheartland on August 16, 2005 05:02PM (EST) Is it just me or has political correctness taken the plunge into the absurd? While listening to a local talk radio show the host was just about to say “councilman” in reference to a female council member. But, stopped in mid-word to correct himself & say “councilwoman.” Even the fact that I used the word “council member” is telling about the condition of our society when it relates to political correctness. Do you remember when “man” in the context of councilman meant mankind? Our society has become so fragile that traditional meanings have been lost or traded in exchange for the meanings learned at “sensitivity training seminars.” Have we forgotten that “women” are also a part of mankind? Or, would it be politically correct to say “womankind?” With this new trend I guess it would be fitting that we set up a “sensitivity council” to reword all of our founding documents that have references to “man.” Or, does this fact mean that our founders wanted only men to have rights & women to remain subservient? I hope you’re beginning to see the absurdity in political correctness at this point. This political correctness has found it’s way into other parts of life. All blacks have become African-Americans. All Spanish speaking folks have become Latinos; to include those from South & Central America as well as all related islands. No longer can we call them Mexicans, or Puerto-Ricans, or Africans, or even Jamaicans. We must lump them into an unidentifiable generic label. Putting “America” at the end of an identifying name, I believe, is still acceptable. Of course there’s African-American, Mexican-American & Arab-American. Even “Indians” have given way to “Native-Americans.” Now, I am not suggesting that we return to mean spirited derogatory terms as the norm. But, I just don’t believe that identifying labels constitutes racism. Nor do I believe using traditional words such as “councilman” or “mailman” or “congressman” is intended to keep women subservient to men. On the contrary; it makes them our equals by not identifying them as something different. http://fromtheheartland.myblogsite.com/ www.fromtheheartland.20m.com |

| Anarcho-capitalist Posts: 1,972 | I put brutally honest, because it included the word "honest". It's silly to take perfectly useful words and blur them into incoherency, or use a phrase containing 20 syllables to say something a couple could do just as well. I'm not trying to encourage people to be mean, but people will just become accustomed to the PC phrases and still feel slightly if they hear them, so we'll be saying 10 times as much with nothing to show for it either and then if someone reverts to the a shorter term, it might cause cardiac arrest. So I encourage brutal honesty for health reasons (just kidding on the last part). There's a television series called "Becker". He's a bit overly harsh at times but I still admire his way of saying things straight.Freedom - are you man enough to handle it? If so, join us in New Hampshire! | Principled Observer Location: Toledo, Ohio Posts: 13,873 | I do call a spade a spade, so here is an example. Our president, is a traitorous, treasonous, backstabbing, unmoral money hound. His administration and their tactics are deplorable. The opposing party, that makes up the rest of the house and senate, and all other elected seats except a few, are equally as corrupt, misguided and mistaken. All citizens of this nation deserve equal rights, and both major parties are breaking their backs to restrict our freedom and our access to justice. The time to revolt is NOW.
