| Mr. Queen Posts: 231 | Yes, I was waiting for that <rolleyes.> The fact is, this public conversation has led to some private conversations that are actually a lot more pressing and important. Silence is preferable to puling anyway. Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest. Mohandas Gandhi |

| Mr. Queen Posts: 231 | This is just me speaking here - while I enjoy scrapping, I enjoy getting into more in-depth conversations (which necessitates a common ground starting point) even more. Others feel they learn more from civil disagreement (or even scrapping), that's their preference. Anyway that's just my own feelings; like I say many don't see it that way. We're all going to be starting a bash thread on Leopard/michael soon; you should see what we've decided to call it Hope you get in on that action ![]() Among the many misdeeds of the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms, as the blackest. ![]() Iconoclast Posts: 5,077 | Ouch, it pains me to read this explanation of the US public school system, because it is so in error, and can not lead to a better education system. To fix a problem it must not only be correctly identified, but there must be a solution as well. The real push for universal free public education was the social unrest during 1820-1930's. Origanally much of country was established by religious colonist. Each religious group believed it knew how to produce the most saintly people. This was the clearly the goal of Puritans and Quakers. The goals of Methodist and Catholic were to just make people acceptable to God, but clearly you can see in the name Methodist, they thought they had a method for achieving this goal. Okay, these communities were tightly controlled by the religious leaders, but by 1820 were overwhelmed by immigrants and could no longer maintain control. This threaten our new democracy. Democracy, attempts to achieve the same thing, but it does so without religious dogma. Religion teachs what to think. When correctly understood, democracy teaches how to think. Christianity did not give us democracy. Now one saw democracy in the bible until there was literacy in Greek and Roman classics. Thank goodness, largely because of the Quakers, there was enough literacy in Greek and Roman classics and enough philosophical motivated belief than humanity could be save, that instead of the absolute authority over the people choice, we chose education for citizenship, and rode through the hard times giving democracy with universal education a chance. It was the responsibility of public education to teach a set of American values, and to establish a CULTURE that would equal social order without authority over the people. We replaced this edcuation with education that has been producing products for industry and a technological society with unknown values, since 1958. That leaves only authority over the people for social order. If we do not realize what we have done, and immediately reverse it, we have fought every war for nothing. Trust me, Bush's No Child Left Behind Act, is about the New World Order he and his father brag we are, not about the democracy we think we are. |
