Is Striptease an Art?

Police in Idaho Say Strippers Aren't Art

By REBECCA BOONE
BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Art night at Erotic City apparently wasn't artistic enough. Police raided the Boise bar Monday night for violating the city's nudity ordinance, which requires that dancers wear at least pasties and a thong unless they are engaging in a performance with ``serious artistic merit.''

Well, what do you think guys? Is this art or is it not? I say "No". But, hey, what do I know? Let's hear from the guys!

Well you could also say mimeing is an art, also acting. I dont see why they didnt make the case that these girls were actors portraying strippers. Which is completely different from strippers being strippers.

I wouldn't recommend sex, drugs and insanity for everyone, but its always worked for me.

The point could be made that if it's entertainment, then it's art, but I think the better point is that if it's wrong, it's wrong. Is stealing okay if it's done in an art class? Is murder okay? If nudity in public is wrong, then they need to start covering up statues and arresting toddlers whose pants fall down.

Foolish prudes.

The question isn't whether they're prudes (they are) but whether it's art.
Well, what's art? (And what the hell does he mean "they were dancing"? Ain't dance serious art? )

Seems to me that the artistic part is in the tease rather than the strip.

It's all in how you define "art". Body art is becoming seen more and more, and it, usually, involves a nude body. I'd think striptease to be more of a humanistic mating ritual which provides no merit in the literal world of art. However, it's sense of "entertainment" can be compared to that of theater/drama. Therefor, striptease could indeed be consider a form of art. Las Vegas is full of shows (X, Jubilee, etc.) where drama and stripping meet. Is that not considered a form of art?

If Amsterdam can make sex into Art (which I have seen in several shows) then stripping definitely qualifies as art. The states laws are too restrictive. I would have thought this would come down to the right to do whatever you like on a private property. Other people are not being exposed to the art form so why is everyone up in arms?

That would have done it, I believe. In that case, they would have been acting, and could have claimed art. Dancing is also an art, but stripping is not considered to be in the same category. Dancing is expression through movement, and I believe the primary mover in stripping is the nudity, whether the dancing is any good or not.

I believe that is the American way. Stick their collective legislative nose into other people's business - primarily for financial gain thru fines, etc. We have states where non-procreating sexual acts are illegal. I have read cases where people were prosecuted for them. Eventually we will need a $35.00 permit for nose-blowing in a private bathroom. Ahhh.... the land of the free.

A women's body is art.

Now if it's a dude up there shaking his junk around, definately arrest his ass.

Yes. If done right, stripping is an art. Too often, the very act of removing one's clothes and jiggling a little bit is considered good enough.

The real artists are the ones traveling the country making good money as headline acts.

The question is: Is giving a guy a hard on and making him jizz his shorts an art? Well, its not an exact science.

Yes, its art.
