More death by armed lunatic

Have I missed something on this board or has there been, in fact (apart kingjust's short-lived comparison question), zero discussion of the Minnesota shooting?

Has death by gunshot become such a routine part of the fabric of US society that it isn't considered a matter for debate?

US fabric? Try human fabric. People have been killing each other since the beginning of time. Methods are secondary. More guns. Less lunatics. Simple.

Well, Lou, have you never heard of Switzerland's citizen army? (Look it up.) The male populace is armed to the teeth with modern infantry weapons. But, somehow, the inanimate objects over here don't mow innocents down with quite the same frequency as the inanimate objects over there.

Now how do you figure that?

Switzerland...ahh yes, you guys just engineer societies to do the killing for you. An economic foundation built in part with gold teeth. Brilliant!!!

(our population is also 43X the size of yours).

We do? Hmm. Mystic stuff.

According to the US National Vital Statistics Report for 1997, an average of 89 Americans per day died of gunshot wounds that year. That was one every 16 minutes.

So, according to your stated reasoning, with one forty-third the poplulation, there should in 1997, or any other recent year, have been a mere two Swiss a day shot to death, or one every 12 hours.

So sorry, Lou old chap. But it just ain't anywhere near like that. Nowhere near. And I imagine not even in Albania, say, is it anything like in the States. (And if it is, well good for you guys for being less murderous than the notorious Albanians. :) )

So you'd better revise yore reasoning theah boy.

You guys, shut up! This is a tragedy and you are making it an occasion for an accusatory circus...
NY Times story on this: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/24/na...tml?oref=login
Quote:
Tribal members say the killings made it clear, if there was ever any doubt, that the broader culture, including the stew of Internet hate that might have influenced the young killer, cannot be kept out. And some wonder whether the curtain of reserve that has kept outsiders from looking in - the roadsides here bristle with warnings against trespassing by visitors who might stray from the state highway - might now inhibit other Americans from sharing or understanding the tribe's pain.

The tribe has forbidden photographs of the impromptu shrines to the 10 people who were killed and the many more injured in the shootings. Tribe members say they have been told not to talk, and any reporter who is caught by the tribal police striking up a conversation with a resident, about anything at all, risks arrest; journalists have been routinely ejected this week. The tribe's grief is private and not the world's business, said the tribal chairman, Floyd Jourdain Jr., in an interview.
<snip>
Mr. Jourdain also dismissed the suggestion that the killings, and the role that might have been played by the white racist and neo-Nazi Web sites apparently frequented by the shooter, Jeff Weise, exposed any new deep vulnerability on the reservation. The tribe, he said, already has problems that are mirrored in the rest of America - alcohol, drugs, gangs and poverty.

"We all listen to the same radio, watch the same TV and utilize the same technologies," he said. "That's the reality of the times."

I completely agree. The world needs to butt the heck out, and let them have time to heal.

Volconvo is a debate board, Pat. And the fact that such a shocking percentage of deaths in the United States -- a rich and developed nation not in a state of armed conflict -- are due to penetration of the organism by high-speed projectiles is a matter worthy of reflection and debate.

Are you suggesting that Volvonvo should limit its scope to matters that are non-tragic in nature? If so, a lot of your own posts would seem to be on inappropriate subjects.

The Red Lake school shooting won't be receiving anywhere near the media attention that Columbine got because Columbine was a rich white school and Red Lake is a poor native school.
