| Retired Posts: 7,312 | I understand that, but the govenment doesn't seem to see it that way. It seems to retain the right to be a threat to it's citizens if said citizens represent a potential threat to it. Additionally, we can do nothing against a tyrannical government. Someone earlier drew the comparison to Iraq. If we can conquer them, it would be an even simpler task to conquer US citizens. This notion that having guns could allow us to revolt successfully is ridiculous! "...with like-minded people one cannot discuss. | THROBBIN ROBIN Location: USA Posts: 311 | I want my gun rights, not only because it is my right as a LAW ABIDING citizien, therefore cannot be taken away, but because I use my rifles for practical uses, I hunt with them. It is not justified that because the law makers do not hunt (or don't believe in it) that it should be taken away. I hate skiing. Should that be taken away too? DON'T TAKE AWAY MY RIGHTS JUST BECAUSE YOU DON'T EXERCISE YOURS. Better to be thought a fool with ones mouth shut, than to speak and remove all doubt |

| Igneous Magma Location: Edmonton, Canada Posts: 209 | A few points I'll make: First, being in Canada, we have a large open type country like the US and have also gotten a large gun culture. In Canada there are actually more guns per capita than in the US. In fact, the government assumed there were about 7 million rifles in Canada for our 30 million citizens. However, after their recent gun registration law which has been a debacle, 8 million rifles have been registered. That doesn't even take into acount that thousands of gun owners are refusing to register their weapons. It is now thought that there are more than 10 million rifles, not counting handguns, shotguns, etc. We are a heavily armed nation it seems. Yet less than 10% of our violent crimes are committed with guns. And we have less than 2% the number of murders compared to the US, despite having 10% the population. So per capita our murders are 5 times lower. Obviously the claims of the leftists are wrong, more guns don't make a society worse. It is not the guns in America that are the problem, it is a combination of many toher factors. For example, racism, too much urban density, the stratification and creation of ghettoes, heavy government regulations which keep people poor, etc. etc. |

But just like you have an inordinate proportion of non-caucasians in your prisons we have an inordinate proportion of aboriginals. Being asw aboriginals tend to live on reserves and are an extremely small proportion of our overall population it has not led to as many problems as you have had. It is distressing, but not a homicidal problem as it is south of the border. |

| Molten Ash Posts: 30 | I read about England's crime rate on the U.S. Dept of Justice Bureau of statistics page: http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/pub/html/cjus...sew96/highs.htm. I don't live in England so I don't know what it's really like but Im not trying to spread misinformation. My point is, banning guns gives criminals more opportunity to commit violent crime while taking away the ability of citizens to defend themselves. Some argue that the cops should be left to protect us but they're only real function, at least here, is to respond to a crime after it happens. Oh, and my stats are from 1995. I didn't realize the gun ban was in 1998. I made my comments about England with insufficient information. |
