Jeffrey Lee Parson, 19, of Hopkins, Minn., will serve his time at a low-security prison and must perform 10 months of community service. He had faced up to 10 years in prison, but the judge took pity on the teen, saying his neglectful parents were to blame for the psychological troubles that led to his actions. ``(The Internet) has created a dark hole, a dungeon if you will, for people who have mental illnesses or people who are lonely,'' U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman said. ``I didn't see any parent standing there saying, 'It's not a healthy thing to lock yourself in a room and create your own reality.''' http://channels.netscape.com/ns/news...1606502752.htm Well, it serves him right. But here's my question: why lay blame on the parents? I mean, isn't it quite obvious to any 18 year old that this sort of thing is wrong and should not be done? There's a thread somewhere which poses the question "Why does America coddle its killers". My question is why does America do the same with its teenagers? What's your view on this? |

Sadly because of environmental, medical /biological, parenting, genetics, etc., the real intellectual age doesn't always coincide with the chronological age. I would hope that sometime in the near future these two factors could be combined to a real age and accountability then could be accurately accessed. and may I ask do you think we coddle our convicted (this could be a trap) killers? Perhaps not as stiff a penaty as I would have liked, but at least he will have some time to think about his actions. Computer virus spreaders should be treated in prison as child molesters are. After all, the could be infecting children computers as well, and that is a crime against children. Not to mention the poor, or elderly. It should be clear that these people have no reguards for anybody but themselves, and are not fit to call themselves part of society. The simple aim to cause as many problems for others as possible, and society can do without them. I say punish them to the full extent of the law. |
