Athletics are overemphasized in American Society?

Just trying to generate some ideas, arguments for my debate next week.

    Affirmative:
    Michael Jordan makes 30x Obama
High school recruitment brings an imbalance in college decisions.
Steroid use is a huge problem in high schools.

    Negative:
Obesity Rates are at its highest, and athletics help combat it.
Athletics is a way to relieve stress.
    (really need more here :/)

Any of you have more ideas?

Well I for one don't like the idea of placing 'teamwork' above all else. It discourages critical thinking and personal reflection, which is what people really need to become successful adults.

I don't think athletics are over-emphasized in America except as an entertainment for people to watch.

Very few Americans, in fact, participate in athletics, most watch it.
