Incest

Do you think it should be decriminalized and incestuous unions be recognized as valid marriages? Please discuss and express your views.

So is that a yay or a nay? Do you support legalizing incest?

Are there health risks for the child? I don't care who consenting adults have sex with, but if you're risking having a child with health problems then that's a different matter.

So if they swear not to have any children, you'd say "yes"?

If they are consenting adults and there is no reason to think that a possible child is in danger I don't see what the problem is. I'm not sure that there are health risks to the child. Are there more risks than any other sexual union? I don't know.

well i dont know about the health risks involved i was just saying what my mum told me probably what her mum told her and so on.

as long as they are not hurting anyone else (including unborn children through genetics) two people who love each other should be able to marry!

didnt a man marry a horse?? must have been on jerry springer lol

quote "A major argument against incest is genetics. If you allow two closely related people to marry, their offspring may be prone to some serious defects because he or she would have genetic defects and poor general health."

taken from http://www.americandaily.com/article/5431 titled "are you ready for incest?"

Allowing related people to get married would open up a huge can of worms to deal with. How are you going to prevent them from having children...neuter them? and if they do have children how to do you deal with it. And then i'm sure many people would try to have children in secret, with possibly serious repercussions on the unsupecting child and/or his/her future offspring.

Go ahead and legalize it. If you really want to marry your brother or cousin, go for it. How can you prevent anyone from having children? Too many people who shouldn't have kids do.

OK, so how come nobody's come out to demand decriminalization and recognition of incestuous marriages?

I was raised to think it is just to strange to contemplate, but I oppose it for what I consider a valid reason.
If either parent in a "normal" relationship is prone to having some sort of flaw, such as retardation, baldness, diabetes or joining the Democratic Party, having offspring with a close relative may double the chance of the kid getting something like that which may ordinarily lie dormant or it may surface in the following generation.
The taboo seems to have worked for all these years so why tinker with it, unless there is some actual benefit I'm not aware of.

No actual benefit; just a matter of rights (or so I'm led to believe).

If we legalize incest then we legalize molestation -- simple as that.

Honestly, this is getting ridiculous, now...

The taboo existed in the past because of the genetic problems it caused. However there may come a time when it will not matter. Perhaps the couple will go to a fertility clinic and provide their genetic material and just the healthy genes will be combined to form what the parents consider to be the perfect child with little to no genetic illnesses. Then again the ultimate incest would be to allow you to clone yourself. In the end it is all about making babies. As long as the job gets done and there is sufficient variation to survive changes in the environment then who cares.

tinybear, I have seen enough of Weychels arguments to know that her/his form of argument is conflation. Because some polygamists do incest and incest is bad therefore polygamy is bad. It is a stupid argument by Weychel thinks it is brilliant. So there you have it for Weychel.

Starboy: Speaking of levels of stupidity, I should inform you that this debate is in regards to incest and not polygamy.

tinybear: If incest were made legal, then a parent would legally be able to marry their own child. If you do not see the connection here between molestation, then you are the one not following.

"Shooting people in the head should be legalized."
"But... that would be murder."
"No, murder remains a crime; we're just talking about shooting people in the head!"
