Wearing Nazi Armbands/Clothing

Should this be condemned, criminalized...etc? Hey Libertarians, no harm, no foul, right?

Hell, the idea WAS to offend. Then he said he apologized for bad taste? Which one is it?

It's like the punks of the 80s: Bad taste was the point. At least they didn't apologize...

I agree. What a hypocrite. But he should have realized that a guy of his position simply cannot afford to offend. He's an idiot as well as a hypocrite. :)

I agree. :p I'm still trying to figure out how a nazi uniform even fits into the category of a "colonial and native" theme.

Like I said, the guy's not too bright. But I take it no one here's advocating condemnation and/or criminalization of the display/wearing of Nazi symbols, right? I mean if people want to be tasteless/idiotic it's their own business, no?

I definitely disagree about banning symbols simply because of their historical representation. In Europe, anything even related to Nazism is banned (even computer games and movies related to Nazis need to use the Imperial German symbols, which is quite stupid).

Its like banning the American flag because of all the crimes committed by the US over the years.

Of course, realistically in any war the winners are the ones who are right. The Allies could've gassed all German citizens, and it would still be legal (if a bit tasteless).

In a free country, there is no guarantee not to be offended.

There is still a huge market for collecting Nazi memorabilia, as there should be. Who can deny that the Nazi's were very fashionable dressers, or that Nazi uniforms were anything less than fabulous. Many an American service man has confifed that exact sentiment to me personally.

You know the old saying, "Those who do not remember history, are doomed to repeat it".

I believe that if viewing things like this offend you, it would behoov you to exercise your freedom to look some place else, or perhaps even voice your opinions on such matters. However, if you choose that course of action, be prepared for some rebuttle.

There is no V-chip for your eyeballs, so it is up to the user to exercise caution when viewing objectionable materials.

Apparently there are those who do.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Prince Harry on Thursday ruled out visiting Auschwitz as atonement for wearing a Nazi uniform at a party just two weeks before the 60th anniversary of the death camp's liberation.

Jewish groups had demanded the 20-year-old grandson of Queen Elizabeth make the symbolic gesture as a way of apologizing for wearing a swastika armband and an army shirt with Nazi regalia at a costume party on Saturday.

The prince has apologized for his "mistake" but Jewish rights groups and politicians said he should do more.

"This was a shameful act displaying insensitivity for the victims, not just for those soldiers of his own country who gave their lives to defeat Nazism but to the victims of the Holocaust ..." said Rabbi Marvin Hier, dean of the U.S.-based Simon Wiesenthal Center.

He added in a statement: "We strongly urge Prince Harry to accompany the British delegation on January 27th to the Auschwitz death camp to commemorate 60 years since liberation. There he will see the results of the hated symbol he so foolishly and brazenly chose to wear."

I have no problem with it. If I had a Nazi uniform, I'd want to wear it to a costume party. Thankfully, I'm not royalty, so I wouldn't get all the attention. That being said, being a prince, he certainly should have excercised more tact when choosing his costume.

I find it "distasteless" to be a "prince" in the first place, so I don't really care if he wears a rainbow on his sleeve, or a swastika.

What is the British equivalent for "dumb as a sack of hammers?" For a prince to show up dressed as a Nazi is about as stupid as you can get and still not need to be watered twice a day. His grandmother is receiving Holocaust survivors at Buckingham Palace this week in observance of the sixtieth anniversity of the liberation of Auschwitz. So ass-hole Harry dresses up as a Nazi. Brilliant.

It doesn't help that Harry is a well known screw-up. He was caught smoking grass, getting drunk and has been accused of cheating in school. A rich, spoiled, very stupid jerk.

knowing the royal it was in fact probably a publicity stunt... he probably learned it all from his mother. Let's face, a few weeks ago he was in the news all praised up, now he gets a hammering but he is in the news again....

Next time maybe he'll go in drag...

Sheesh you guys need to lighten up. It was a fancy dress ball, Harry was dressed in a costume. Thats it, nothing else. The rest of it is political correctness and drongos spouting off at the mouth.

As for starboy, royalty is a birthright, not an elected position, something yanks seem to have forgotten. Get a life you guys. A teenager wore a fancy dress uniform to a costume party. Thats it. All the rest is crap.

And if I offended you, hahahaha........because obviously thats all it takes to offend the weak of mind these days. As bad as those chaps getting down for disorderly conduct for telling lawyers jokes in a courthouse and upsetting some lawyer. What a dweeb he was. Get a life and a sense of humour. Try not to live in the past. Move on. Get over it. Sheesh, most of you are too young to have had any personal experience in WW2 let alone WW1 and even then you did your darndest to not get involved. Now you think you have a right to tell someone what to wear and where to wear it.

lolol

too funny

i'm not offended by it, but i gotta hand it to him - that was one dumbassed decision.

i can't see myself ever being motivated to don a nazi's outfit, regardless of the party's theme.

Let people wear what they want. It was a private party, I doubt Harry expected to be photographed, so the only people to be offended are your friends and the assholes you pretend to like for the rest of the night. And it's not like he's actually a royal anyway, his mother was Lady Diana Spencer and his father is James Hewitt.

Really what do people expect from Royals? If you inbreed long enough, even if the family is quite extended, you get shitty offspring. Look at Prince Charles, he talks to plants and is terrified of grey goo, or his brother edward, seriously all you need to do is look at him to know somethings wrong (nice wife mind, and some new blood to the family too).

However, Harry has gone up in my estimation over the years. He gets totally drunk, smokes pot, gets into fights and does stupid things on nights out. In other words, he's a normal 20 year old. How can anyone be fit to be king (bit of long shot for him mind, maybe William will be killed when he gets in the military) unless they can empathise with real peoples lives?
