School Kids Strip Searched Because Of Missing $10!

When a middle school girl told her teacher at Mainland Preparatory Academy in La Marque, Texas that she was missing a $10 bill, school officials responded by strip-searching 10 of her classmates, report The Associated Press and United Press International.

Police are still investigating the incident that involved 11- and 12-year-olds at the award-winning charter school who were separated by gender, sent to separate rooms, and then forced to strip to their underwear while their clothing was searched. A male teacher supervised the strip-search of the three boys, while a female teacher took charge of the seven girls. No money was found. The principal, Wilma Green, defended her actions, telling AP, "Nobody objected to it. Most of the kids didn't mind because they wanted to get their name cleared. It was no different than what the students would be doing when they would be in P.E. We searched everything down to the socks."

The police say the search is not against the law, but they want to make sure it was done legally. Their findings will be sent to the Galveston County district attorney's office. "It's not illegal," La Marque Police Chief Richard Price told UPI. "We don't see it as a criminal offense. We want to see if anything occurred during the search that was illegal. We want to make sure everything that was done legally."

At least one parent filed a police complaint and withdrew her four children from the school. "I have never signed a consent to let my kids be strip-searched--never," Shelli Owens, the mother of a 12-year-old boy who was searched, told AP. Mainland Preparatory School is located 40 miles southeast of Houston.

Well, is this legal? Any lawyers here who can tell me?

When I lost $10, I just stole it from someone else.

Problem solved.

If anything, they should have had the police there to conduct a "legal" strip search so as to avoid all this trouble.

Or the principal could have just reached into her wallet and given ten bucks to the kid who lost hers and none of this would have happened. :)

Did they get the serial number of the bill? Otherwise, how would they know it was the correct $10, should they find a bill?

This is just an attempt to frighten the students into not stealing, into behaving. Eitehr that, or the teachers are pedophiles. It's very illegal, and the students should be compensated and the teachers prosecuted. Only the police are allowed to perform searches of a person's person.

Of course, it was up to the kids to refuse in the first place. This is why we need more education about the rights of citizens and fewer projects where you bake bread in 7th grade Social Studies. You have to protect your own rights first - it's when you can't that you must be helped. I'd much prefer the children to have said "You can't do that" than have had to read about the incident.

I just hope all of you who have kids, mark this up to one more reason your child won't attend a "public" school.

I say:
I couldn't agree more. Too bad that the public system is a tool for mis-informing you of your rights, and since it would not further the means of the system to better educate kids to prosecute teachers, I doubt it would be added to the next years curriculum.

If parents truly gave a damn, they would be in the school once a month AT LEAST, to overview curriculum, talk to teachers, talk to students and see what their kids have to go through in order to learn the BASICS that are taught. Those same basic skills received through grade 12, can be taught by a concerned parent, more tailored to the child, and at a pace that suits the child specifically in much less time than 12 years, which allows a child to go to college early, and actually succeed in the modern job market with much more ease than a public schooled child.

Privatize the system, and make parental responsibility for their childs education job 1.

Hooray for the mom with a firm foundation who pulled her kids out of a whack-job institution like the Mainland Preparatory School!

One more reason that my children will be homeschooled.
