    Slavery.

Before the horse was hitched to the plow ,man used a captured slave.

The horse would eventually free the slave from the plow but allowed the slave to be used for other reasons ;in turn allowing his master to contemplate better his surroundings and through the gift of reason create a better world ,for himself and the slave as well.

Slavery was the inevitable slow and tortuous path that would in time allow man to escape from the bonds of barbarism to the clear light of reason; and a civilization based on ethics ,justice and human dignity.

But in recent years a very insidious form of human exploitation has emerged ,that allows one group to gain financial and legal advantages at the expense of another.[AFFIRMATIVE ACTION]

This legalised form of social coercion is widely accepted as an attempt to

remedy the wrongs of the past ,inflicted upon a legally deprived racial entity, by granting special rights and privileges to their descendants, living now ;and sails under the rubric of civil rights.

The effect has been to deny employment and other social rights and benefits of american citizenship to those who are more qualified ,as evidenced by test scores and achievements ;and also by experience ,to a less qualified racial minority based on nothing more that skin color.

This is a subtle but devasting form of human exploitation that clearly needs to be addressed. But has as yet been seriously immune to criticism.

Are you arguing that slavery led to civilization and prosperity, but affirmative action will lead to nothing less than the downfall of humanity?

Would you care to substantiate your bold claims with some evidence?

O.K. .. Slavery in man's early history allowed for the creation of wealth and free time ,enough for man to study and advance .

In ancient time slaves were part of the spoils of war ;whereby the strong defeated the weak. We see this in nature where a stronger specie dominates the weaker.

With affirmative action you have something unnatural taking place where the less qualified are rewarded with positions of employment which would otherwise go to the more qualified. This all takes place with the full coercive force of federal law.

Just as slavery was known as the coercive system.

Slavery makes it easier for slaveholders and their country to become powerful - for example, America, South Africa, and the Gulf States are similar - Saudi Arabia, etc. Their work visas are so restrictive. In some countries, foreign workers are a majority of the population. They come, and it is a crime, with jail, for them to leave their jobs, for them to look for another job, for them to file a complaint about not being paid, about being beaten, or, as is very common for women brough in as nannies, to be raped. It's not literally slavery, but to me the result is the same.

And then you have the effects of slavery without the forced labor. Roma (Gypsies) in the Balkans, for example. We don't make them work for us, but people are shocked and horrified if they vote, if they sit at a table at a restaurant, etc.

I doubt affirmative action is as bad as its opponents try to make it seem. An employer is not going to hire someone who is unqualified, and as far as you know, said employee may be much more personable than the alternative.

Not to mention white women gain the most from affirmative action.

So here we have another example of " think up the most stupidist way of doing something , and then demand that that is the way it should be done."

Do you have examples of some people who would do this, so we can all have a good laugh at there complete incompetence.

You really do need to get an education on how things are done before you start debating them.

You should read some Frederick Douglass. Chattel slavery is morally abhorrent. And impractical. The people who are slaves have as much potential to be great as anyone else, and to take away that potential is a great crime.

If you can show me evidence that affirmative action policies give demonstrably worse results than regular hiring/admissions policies I will listen. Until then...

But truth, Hajjaj was convinced, held many layers.

In a small way I agree with the OP. I think it was Iceland or Sweden that recently introduced a temporary positive descrimination law in order to get more women into politics. It worked and I think they now have the highest level of female MPs.

While the result is good I think it sends the wrong message: women can't do anything themselves. To succeed as much as men they need to cheat.

I think women should have the same opportunity as men have in getting elected (I acknowledge that that isn't the case in most places).

What I don't like is artificially thrusting women into politics for the sake of political correctness.
As I already said, it undermines their legitimacy and also, it doesn't take into account the possibility that having more women in politics isn't necessarily a good thing or that the same numbers of women and men would want to be politicians, all other things being equal.

You could care less could you?

..which hardly means the people will win. The political structure needs to be broken up, not added to. All this ranting about "equal representation" doesn't matter to me, because I desire no politicians to begin with.

To be fair, Michigan's Macomb County Commissioner, Carey Torrice, is really something else:

The dumbest thing a nation can do is to import slaves. The only thing dumber is to free them.
