| Igneous Magma Posts: 372 | As an American, I hear a lot of horror stories about American prisons, but I'd like to know how it fares against European prisons. Things I'm interested in hearing are it's conditions, the turnover percentage of people who do reform or don't, it's capacity, or anything interesting other members would like to share. This, of course, comes from my burning desire to pull a real life Grand Theft Auto 3 but hmm what country? :) Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups |

EDIT 1- Well found an article by the BBC saying prison condtions in the UK vary widely http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/321487.stm More on the way. EDIT 2- An article in the guardian mentioning reoffend rate in UK is 58% within 2 years. http://education.guardian.co.uk/further/st...,875220,00.html I'll add more when I see them but gonna stop looking now. In the states I believe it's more like a holding facility, where those without family network with other felons and commit more crimes once they're out. Australian juvenile detention camps are even worse than that! Officers at Quamby like to belt up the kids a bit when theres a fight. Do European officers massage your shoulders after you've been involved in a riot? If I fail in business, I'll be getting a ticket to Norway. Know any good casinos? Also, if I get arrested, should I ask for the caviar with mussels, or the lobster and champagne? Ideological loyalty is the act of giving your soul to a vague concept, to be manipulated by people smarter than you. |

| Hot Lava Posts: 1,859 | american prisons have a long way to go before they reach the glories of the european dungeons... or even as recently as auschwitz or dachau... or the more civilized siberian labor camps in the glorious ussr... "I really like this jacket, but the sleeves are much too long..." insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results... |

| Molten Ash Posts: 143 | I did post something before about Norweigian Prisons. I heard similar things about prisons in Denmark. Generally, the best prisons are in Scandanavia and the worst are in Eastern Europe. Russia has horrid prisons. I heard the same about Czech prisons in jails where torture is routinely practiced. France has a pretty bad reputation for civil right violations and Britian is slightly better. |

| Playful Location: Groningen, the Netherlands Posts: 805 | Well, as far as I know prisons here (in the Netherlands) are a luxury resort. They get tv, they get to work out, study, play games etc. There is a huge debate going on over here (because the prisons are full) wheter we should allow 2 people to occupy the same cell. As far as I'm concerned (But I don't know for sure, just what the general media tells me) we should ditch everything 'luxurious' and have more severe punishments, because it's just crazy how low/weak alot of punishment are here atm. On the other hand... what is 'low'?... how do you determine the 'right' duration of imprisonment? when has someone 'learned' or when has someone been 'punished enough'? When the victems have been satisfied? |
