| Location: Finland Posts: 712 | (didn't know in which section this could belong...) I'm reading Michael Moore's "Stupid white men", and am now at the chapter about US education and it's poor state. I thought I was used to stuff like this, but one thing blew my mind; Do companies like Dr Pepper / Pepsi / Coca Cola and others actually "sponsor" schools with materials against advertising and such? With painting their logo on the rooftop, telling teachers to allow students to drink their products in class, even come with full classes with the info twisted in a favor for their corporate image? I find this sickening, could someone living in the states tell me if this is true, and if, how widely spread and accepted? |

| Guest Posts: n/a | THIS IS BECUASE OF THE UNIONS GOUGING THE TAX PAYER. ITS BECAUSE OF MISAPPOPRIATION OF MONEY AND BEUROCRATIC EDUCRATS. LINCOLN WAS POOR AS DIRT AND HE LEARNED TO READ AND WRITE, THEN HOW IS IT THAT POOR KIDS TODAY CANNOT? ITS ALL OF THE PEOPLE IN THE EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT CLAIM TO BE DOING IT NOT FOR THE MONEY, BUT THEY REALLY ARE, THEY MISPLACE BILLIONS. THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS NEED TO BE OVERHAULED AND MANY PEOPLE NEED TO BE FIRED. |

A public school is controlled by the government, thus you need to apply to the State government to get permission (which is difficult alone!). Ideological loyalty is the act of giving your soul to a vague concept, to be manipulated by people smarter than you. |

My father actually works for a beverage company (I won't say who but it's one of the two big ones), and yes, they do sponsor schools. I remember my high school was given a new soccer field in return for machine placement, and calendars in the classrooms. P.S....have you watched bowling for columbine yet Paavo? So it goes |

Got a bit on the mushy side in the end, but a great flick none the less. :B |

"I really like this jacket, but the sleeves are much too long..." insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results... |

| Molten Ash Posts: 31 | The local school here is sponsored by Budweiser and it is called Budweiser High. The mascot is the "King of Beers" and runs around in a fluffy king robe and wears a bear-cap style crown on his head. In reality, I have never heard of anything such as mentioned in the original post. Education needs to be geared down in America... meaning simplified, but strengthened. All sports should be after school and never interfere with the educational process. Even if you get bad grades you should never be kicked out of a sport, why? Why not help those from being worse and get them into some sport that would definately keep them out of additional trouble. Schools should be split between strong, weak, and disruptive students. Strong students (school A) should be able to be educated without distractions. Weak students (school B) should be able to attend a school that fits their needs and helps them improve and enter school A. Disruptive kids need a different environment to help with their needs and to not distract the others that actually want to learn. Help them improve and learn about behavior so they can advance to one of the other schools. |

| Supercalifragilistic Posts: 431 | I really dislike Michael Moore, and for good reason. Before you read anything he says and actually take it seriously, I suggest you read a few things first: http://www.mooreexposed.com/ http://www.moorelies.com/ http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article....RTICLE_ID=34367 http://www.spinsanity.org/columns/20031016b.html Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. |
