Quite a lot of vegetarians (by no means all, or even most I'm sure) seem to think my diet is THEIR business, however.

Some vegetarians are offended by carnivores or omnivores, but most just don't eat meat.

Their offense is their problem. It's irrational and pointless.

Sasha,
I guess you were responding to me about the wastage thing. I think you're right that we do alot worse in terms of wastage than just raising cattle that overconsume--and I'm not trying to ignore those lots of other things. I just meant that it seems a little ridiculous to force cattle to overeat so we get more meat for our dollar, when wastage is such a big problem.

The only nutrient that vegans may have a problem with is B12, which is easy to get it pill form, from some types of yeast, and BEER also contains some.

This probably has less to do with the diet itself but rather with the fact that people who choose to be vegan or vegetarian are showing concern for their diet. Those who don't care are classed omnivores by default and shcew the results. Regardless of what one eats the more attention you pay to your health the higher are the chances you will lead a healthy life.

I was wondering, does the poll results currently reflect what we'd see in the national average of developed countries?

There are 44 posts to the poll. The answer is No, the poll is not indicative of much of anything.

But we can conclude that the majority of the forum users are omnivores. *nods*

Actually according to studies only around 1% of the American population are vegetarian, less are vegan. So there is a higher number of vegetarians here.... that's probably because vegetarians will read this thread, and people who want to "flame" them will vote

I've been vegetarian for most of my life, vegan for 8 years. We had meat very infrequently when I was a child (holidays and such) I really just never aquired a taste for it. Origianlly there was very little thought into being a vegetarian, it was just a preference. I'm not a member of PETA and I've never asked any omnivore to switch. My signifanct other does eat meat although voluntarily reduced the amout over the years... not because I asked, I support my partners choice as long as mine is also supported. On the other hand a vegetarian diet has provided my partner the opportunity to experience more varieties of international foods than the meat and potatoe family backgroud.

Now that I've been vegetarian / vegan for a long time I've gotten used to being picked and proded about my choices. Retrospectively now I do believe it is more ecological, recently Canada, as part of signing the Kyoto protocol listed eating a vegetarian meal every other day will reduce greenhouse gasses by one metric tonne per year. Also factory farming practices have done some serious damage to our ground water.

I also realize not all "vegetables" are equal. I try to buy organic and local to avoid issues of GMO's and exploitative industry-agriculture which can be really repressive to people and animals alike.

I don't ask anyone to follow my example, I do it because I feel healthier when I eat this way and I think that even if it only makes a small difference it does make a difference.

Tread lightly on this earth.

I voted "i love animals," but i don't. I just think it is immoral to kill animals (for i see no reason to esteem one life higher than an other).

My daughter told me once when she was early teen that she wanted to become a vegetarian... I told her it was fine by me but she would ahve to take up hunting and wearing leather.

Won't have her being a vegatarian for the wrong reasons.

Am I the only one not getting this sentence?
Why would she have to hunt or wear leather is she was going to go veggy?

I'v always wondered why vegetarians, or vegans, aren't content with not eating meat themselves. Why must they try to force the rest of us to forgo animal products? Can someone explain this to me?

I'm no vegetarian. However, being one at one time, I eat extremely healty food when I can afford it. I do this not because I dislike meat, I love a good steak or fresh venison, but because I feel better after a meal like that rather than bloated and mildly nauseous after having a grease burger (with extra mayo because the cook was a slob).

Just personal preference.

I'm sorry - that was supposed to quote the person talking about lead-infected meat on the first page.....

I agree with m3t. Eating greasy, fatty foods also make me queesy and I try to maintain a healthy diet. I do, however eat fish and fowl regularly and red meat occasionally, usually on the weekend in case I overindulge and get that sensation you were describing. I just want to know why the crusade to get people to stop eating meat? I know its not all vegans but why cant the vocal elements live and let live? Is it based on some sort of emotional fanatacism as Imp has suggested?

They can find truffles! Otherwise I agree with you. It's so unhealthy but as John Travolta said in Pulp fiction, "Bacon tastes GOOD..."
