Hmm.. lukewarm at best. I think you'll be fine as long as quest doesn't find out, Grandpa.Roving bands of Christian Muslim-Hunters? Sounds like a new Showtime mini series.

"The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who have not got it."

Catholics are Christians and I'm a Catholic. I've been to mass often enough to know we get the same sermons every year, they don't promote killing anyone, be it in self-defence or to suppress other religions.

I would challenge you to show me anywhere anything that could be interpreted as some sort of 'official' endorsement of killing anyone under any circumstances by the Catholic Church. A sermon, an excerpt from some catechism, something from the Conference of Bishops, interpretations from Papal documents.
Catholics are no more scrupulously honest than Buhddists, Hindus, Muslims or Protestants. Christians are admonished against stealing in the Ten Commandments, I'm sure other religions have something similar.
You can trot out the references to the inquisition next, but I think that would be dishonest, several centuries have passed and Christians aren't about forcible conversions any more.

Did I or are you just making things up?You describe your son as being a member of "roving bands of American troops in predominantly Muslim countries"?

I don't see guns in bars as a big deal. Hell, I've been in a bar or two where I would have felt safer if they handed guns out at the door. I stay away from those bars now. I stay away from pretty much every bar now except the holiday inn type.
Everyone I know who carries a concealed gun (permit or no) will carry them into a bar whether it's legal or not. If someone doesn't carry it into the bar it's always in their car which is just a few steps away anyway.
I really hate laws that try to make this country idiot proof. If you decide to frequent a bar with drunken fights breaking out between toothless hydrocephalics you should expect to get hurt, guns or no guns.
Why don't we just cut to the ultimate idiot proof law and require everyone to roll around in giant plastic(bullet proof of course) hamster balls. We could hermetically seal everyone in their own pod at birth. Like hermit crabs we'd get a bigger one every once in awhile. The inside would be lined with air bags so if we rolled off a cliff it wouldn't hurt.
In this way every drooling idiot would survive to procreate and very soon we'd be a world of drooling idiots. Slippery slope my friends. Today motorcycle helmet laws tomorrow hamster balls!

A little misunderstanding goes a long way.
I said it a couple of pages ago and I'll say it again. Rational people aren't rational when they're drunk. An armed bar full of rational human beings would be in a state of MAD.
The problem is I've never seen a bar full of rational human beings. You can argue that it's unenforceable, but I think in principle it's okay to idiot-proof areas where stupid behavior is inevitable.
The more you complain, the less I care about your problems.
