From a more recent article:

Quote:
In an effort to not offend any one group, especially when it comes to history, what happens is that the full story is not being told. Barton says key information is ignored or left out. Like with the Native American Indians.

Says Barton, "There were just some Native American tribes that were cannibalistic and that's just the way they were, and you just can't make them look good."
"tomboy" and "manpower" are now considered sexist.

"old man" and "old lady" are now considered demeaning to older people.

Say "Eve and Adam" not "Adam and Eve" to avoid implying male priority over women.

And it's not just an American problem... recent news from Britain:
Quote:
A British National Party (BNP) European election broadcast pulled by Channel Five for fears of stirring up racial hatred will now be screened tonight as planned after last-minute changes.
...
“Having viewed the new version Five has reached the conclusion that, though largely incomprehensible, it does not breach the Programme Code.”
Gee that's great.

This page is interesting:

Quote:
A recent situation at the L.A. Times is very illustrative of the conflicts regarding the issue. A review of an opera included the term “pro-life”, as in, “life-affirming.” As it is the Times's policy to use the term “anti-abortion,” the term got changed, even though the meaning was entirely different. They then changed it back and gave the name of the editor who had changed it. They then had to retract the name of the person who had edited it because it is Times policy not to name people who make changes to articles.

Another well-known satirical take on this movement can be found in the book Politically Correct Bedtime Stories, in which traditional fairy tales are rewritten from a so-called politically correct viewpoint and often reverse the roles of good and evil from those of the original version. For example, Hansel, Gretel and their father are evil and the witch is good in the politically correct version of Hansel and Gretel.
...
in a satirical example of so-called P.C. speech, the sentence “The fireman put a ladder up against the tree, climbed it, and rescued the cat” might look like this:

The firefighter (who happened to be male, but could just as easily have been female) abridged the rights of the cat to determine for itself where it wanted to walk, climb, or rest, and inflicted his own value judgments in determining that it needed to be “rescued” from its chosen perch. In callous disregard for the well-being of the environment, and this one tree in particular, he thrust the mobility disadvantaged-unfriendly means of ascent known as a “ladder” carelessly up against the tree, marring its bark, and unfeelingly climbed it, unconcerned how his display of physical prowess might injure the self-esteem of those differently-abled. He kidnapped and unjustly restrained the innocent animal with the intention of returning it to the person who claimed to “own” the naturally free animal.
I doubt it will come to that, but it does get ridiculous.

At my kids' school they no longer called the kids "handicapped" but used the term "resource". Now the kids are making fun of each other and using the term "resource" in a derogatory way.

People need to just cope with the truth and lose their presumption of hatred. Just deal with REAL hatred.

Well for one I think its great they temporarily banned it, and a real shame they gave in in the end and aired it. I dont know if youre familiar with BNP but theyre the neonazi party. The nonsense they talk may lack any sign of sense, but there are idiots out there who do mop it up. This is one of the few cases where I'm happy to support not broadcasting this sh--.

Keeping the jerks off the air is ok with me. This incident has nothing to do with PC. Its one thing to support the right of all to speak etc, but when youve lost 25% of your country's population to these f--- murderers the reality of it sinks in. It would be like the US airing the Taliban political party broadcast, only the nazis have done about (10 million divided by 3000) more damage, and are a far more serious threat. Your terrorism problem is a piddle compared to this. As far as free airtime goes, they can stick their speech right up their freedom as far as I'm concerned, and choke to death on it. I cant see any reason they should be allowed to live, let alone air this crap publically.

I think youve just misunderstood the situation, but just in acse you didnt, Do you support the Talibans right to free nationwide party political broadcasts across the US? Paid for by the taxpayer.

Sometimes it does, sometimes its ok... as ever theres at least some truth on both sides of the PC debate.

quite, it achieves nothing anyway. They _are_ handicapped, get over it.

I think its an age thing. When I was 18 I whined about the people who didnt approve of me, most of us did. Now I could care less about them. The ability to take in bigger things has occurred I guess, plus the ability to approve of self.

No I wouldn't. It might be incorrect to SOLELY blame the ADL, but certainly fingers can be pointed at them for helping to create the current state of political correctness.

Well, let's see - it's coming from California - right??
All I can say to that is it is so typical - and boy does Governer "Arnold" have his job cut out. I wonder if he will say, what is it" Oh, Hostalavesta Baby.

The next thing they will demand is we rename the Black Bird, or Robin Red Breast, or the Pink Flamingo, or the White Swan, etc, etc.

Perhaps instead of a man or a woman we should say he/she or she/he???

It just shows how far some have gone in appeasment. People are offended almost every day in one manner-shape-way of form. Does that mean we have to change everything?? That is absolute insanity!!!!!

I wonder what they would say if you walked up the them and "You F--king Bastard", you would proably be told that the correct term is "You intercoursing fatherless child".

What is America comming to??? God help us from ourselves.

Rox is under the impression that they can exist without massive public support it would seem. To blame an organization for political correctness is naïve and scapegoating social responsibilities.

I thought this might be some interesting reading. I have selected a only few parts as this is quite long in its entirety:

Happy reading :) :) :)

Verbal Disarmament
For those unfamiliar with the term, political correctness is an insidious form of censorship. Under the theory of political correctness, if you say anything that happens to "offend" the most sensitive member of society, you can be subjected to a variety of persecutions and legal actions. What you say may in fact be accurate, and it may have been stated without a trace of malice. It does not have to qualify as slander, in fact it does not even have to cause any tangible harm. As long as somebody feels they have been offended, you are guilty of being politically incorrect.

This strikes me as odd since the last time I checked, this was still the same USA that started its Bill of Rights with a guarantee of free speech. The nation that was founded on the belief that speaking our mind ferverently and passionately was the single most powerful and cherished right we have as citizens. Thomas Jefferson, one of our most outspoken founding fathers, stated in 1808 "The liberty of speaking and writing guards our other liberties."

So where do these PC-proponents get off? Where does it say in the Constitution, the Bill of Rights or any other document of law that we all have the right to "not be offended"?

When somebody tries to float a stupid argument, don't be shy... tell them its stupid! Challenge them to support their facts in a realistic sense. When you shut up and walk away, you let stupidity win by default.

Only two things are infinite,
the universe and human stupidity,
and I'm not sure about the former.
