The more telling issue, Kam, is Reverend Wright. White racists are quick to play the "victim" to justify their racism, and the concept of reverse-racism plays right into that. So when Reverend Wright rails against the injustice of white America, then he's actually a reverse-racist, and therefore, by association, so is Barack Obama.

Combine that with the idea that Obama could be a Muslim (insert specter of Louis Farrakhan next to Osama bin Laden here), add that he's a close, dear, lifelong personal friend of vicious school-aiding terrorists, and whoooa, Katie bar the door! You got white folks runnin' for the hills.

The concept of "White Privilege" is meant to promote guilt.

It certainly doesn't make me feel guilty, any more than a discussion of male privilege makes me feel guilty. I'm aware both exist and I oppose both. I realize many of the advantages I've enjoyed in life and business have been in part due to these unspoken assumptions on the part of others. I don't believe they are a legitimate way to judge people's performance or worth, so while I concede their reality I also protest their existence.

Ok. I assumed a level of understanding of the cultural references since the question itself contained a cultural reference.

If, as I understood it, the question was "If there is such a concept as 'white trash', how can we assume there is such a thing as 'white privilege'?", the answer would be that historically, even the trashiest of the trash in white society were viewed as more trust worthy than the best of black society. You could be a black doctor and still had to fear that when it came down to brass tacks, your word meant nothing against the word of a white man, no matter what his social station or history of honesty and integrity. It illustrates perfectly the hypocrisy of "white privilege", in that a white person that other white people wouldn't trust in any intraracial circumstance was elevated to the status of gold in inter-racial circumstance. Does that help?


And if it makes any difference, I would doubt most Americans would know who the Scottsboro Boys were. An ugly piece of our past I reference more in hopes of getting people to find out than in the assumption that they already know.

Which, along with Lincoln being for strong federal government, made Republicans in 1861 the liberals of their day. Teddy Roosevelt's Republican party was also quite liberal, pro-reform.

By the fifties, the Republican party had turned decided conservative, except for the Southern Dixiecrats, who couldn't bring themselves to join the party of Lincoln. But given the northern Democratic support of Civil Rights, enough was enough, and the Dixiecrats finally fled to the Republican party.

The point being that while that's a lovely sentiment, a lot of folks don't live it, and ignoring that fact simply so you don't have to face unpleasant realities is weak.

After all the treatment of the aboriginal is among the worst of examples of white privileges.
The government never officially recognised they existed until the 60's , they stole their children , their land and their customs.
No aboriginal can walk down a street without the cops stopping him.
Australia even had a white only immigration policy until fairly recently.
White privilege is personified in the treatment of your natives.

Since when is stating a fact about the treatment of aboriginals snipping.
It's not completely off topic as it shows the same mentality exists there in australia.

I'm from Melbourne, a european styled city which revels in its multiculturalism.

I've met very few 'white scum' and those that are deemed as such, by those few with no sense of reality, are usually undiagnosed and self medicating mentally ill people living piece meal lives, struggling for security and stablity... just as many aboriginals also live.

Otherwise, what I'm getting from everyone here is that white privilage is not so much a idea that one colour is treated better than another, but rather the idea that white racists/ supremists deem themselves better than blacks.

I spent several years walkabout in the outback, up north and west. Working with a travelling carpenter. So I got to see a lot of the redneck mentality that exists out there. Especially among the cops.
The aboriginals only struggle where the white man has interfered with their ways. Left to themselves they do better than. The city is their death
