| Black on Black Racism, is it OK? In my FHA class an African foreign exchange student (black as night) talked about discrimination of blacks. He didn't tell of whites discriminating against him, rather his discrimination on other blacks. He goes to school here, but for some extra money he works as a taxi driver. He said under no circumstance will be pick up black males. My teacher in shock (a Latino who works at the Fair Housing clinic) asked why. He said that when he first got the job other taxi drivers, particularly the minority ones told him to forget the PC thing and not pick up blacks. He said this made him extremely angry and he ignored it. Then he went into his personal experience. He was rob twice and beaten once, all 3 occasions by black men. He said a not White, Latinos, Arabs, Indians or Asians have ever run out on the fare, he said its 50/50 that blacks men of all ages will run out on the fare. He chased down a few young black men once and beaten so bad he had to check into the hospital.
After back to back black passengers running out on the fare, he decided to go with the advice of his compadres and not pick up any blacks.
My professor, let's just say didn't understand and blasted him. At first I could really believe what I was hearing. I was starting to feel a little disgusted with the guy, because this was a guy on a visa (a guest of America) taking advantage of America, yet he is openly discriminating against American citizens. If a white person was saying and doing this you would immediately call him a racist or redneck. But I got to think about it. This is a black man just trying to get an education and make a little money. From the little I know of him he is a nice. gentle and highly intelligence guy. Through his personal experience he has seen that picking up black men costs him time, money and can even he a threat to his well being. My professor quizzed 50% running out on fare and not other ethnic group has run out on the fare. He is response, "Yes, that is the truth?"
Is this OK? Would it be OK if the driver was White, Latino or Arab? I am on the fence, because I see the slippery slope, nevertheless, I see this guys point. |
