Iraq banned from Summer Olympics

Iraq banned from Summer Olympics - CNN.com
Quote:
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A few months ago, it seemed liked nothing could stop Iraqi sprinter Dana Hussain from representing her country in the upcoming Summer Olympics.

Then, the International Olympic Committee banned Iraq from competing because of what it says is the government's political interference in sports.

Hussain cried for hours after hearing the news, which arrived in the form of a letter to Iraqi officials.

"She hasn't stopped. It's like finding out that a close relative has died," said her coach, Yousif Abdul Rahman.

Abdul Rahman attempted to console Hussain by assuring her that she could compete in the 2012 Olympics.
Interesting. Do you think they should be allowed to compete? Or do you agree with the decision? Or something else? Please read the entire article first though.

Oh come on. I hope CNN makes this into a big enough stink that the Olympic Committee has to let her back in.

So bring a team of drug cheats like China did in the swimming - fine, change your officials, your banned. Yeah, makes a whole lot of sense.

Yes they should compete. It is ridiculous. I guarantee many of the countries in the 3rd world are far worse. The atrocities to the athletes mainly occurred during Sadam's 2 lovely sons reign over the Iraqi athletes. And if they want to sit on their high horse about human rights, then why the he11 did they give the games to human rights mega-violator China?

Honestly I think this is the Olympics community trying to take a shot indirectly at the US!

Why would it offend China to allow the Iraqis to come to the olympics?

What a joke. The Olympics have never really been about the sports, but about rewarding totalitarian societies for pushing their youth like prized race horses.

To give some insight into what the Olympics are really all about, founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, said that the 1936 Berlin games (the "Nazi" Olympics) had lived up to his highest ideals of what the Olympics should be, and that Hitler had "magnificently served, and by no means disfigured, the Olympic ideal."

Yeah, there's a guy we still want to be honoring...

Didn't the U.S. not lower our flag or something there when the rest of the world did? It was something like that if i remember.

We never do. Our rule is we don't dip our flag for anyone.

Watch next week on the opening ceremonies. Every flag will dip as it passes by the box of the Chinese leaders except ours.

Looks like the IOC has bowed to pressure
IOC lifts Iraq's Beijing ban - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

The Olympics is just a joke now. Seriously, why not just put em all on roids and make it a level playing field. If a high profile star like Marian Jones will do it, anyone will (and does).

You mean people actually watch the Olympics? The only thing I can stomach is the woman's volleyball--and I still wish they'd play it on the beach.

Only countries who follow certain guidlines are supposed to be allowed into the games since niether China nor Iraq have meet those guidlines they have no right to compete.

I have no clue why, but the sport fascinates me. It seems to be a sport completely lacking appeal, but I find it so much easier to watch then baseball.

I'm sorry, but I'd agree with you if you were right.

Very interesting indeed! It reads as though the IOC is behaving like a bully, although the rules and regulations put in place by the IOC is (undoubtedly) to ensure that Olympic fraud doesn't occur. Like, for example, underage competitors winning medals in -- oh, let's say -- woman's gymnastics.

Like most large infrastructures, it appears that the IOC appears to be swarmed in pencil-pushing paperwork and politics.

You are misinformed here, my friend.

The Olympics is a way for the national community to gather in a spirit of competition. The Olympics allow the citizens of the world to witness the best athletes the world has to offer. Although I am an American, I got goosebumps watching the Jamaicans! Furthermore, the Olympics breaks down barriers, allowing people to see folks from other countries as individuals, not strangers out to harm them.

People should compete when they have free choice. People who are commanded by their government should not be allowed to compete, because it kills the spirit of games, they rae suppose to be voluntary fun and achievment , not forced on people. That is why the Olympics have formed rules about how countries must act in order to participate.
