Why do mexicans stare at me?

Though some of you may call me a racist, the fact is I'm just making an observation.

This happens often when I'm in a public place: the grocery store, the mall, on the street. They do it in packs and it makes me uncomfortable.

For whatever reason, Hispanics feel the need to stare at me.
It's as if they've never seen a white person before.
I can understand starring at some 'hot mama' as I sometimes do. But they regularly stare at me :I'm just a normal white guy. I've talked to other people and they have shared with me a similar experience. It's quite creepy.

They usually have a disgustingly smug look on their face, as if to say "hey buddy, how do you like it now, we are in your country, and there's nothing you can do about it."

I'm not saying its all Hispanics, just many of them.

Are Hispanics genetically programmed to stare at you personally ?

Barring the contingency that you're wearing one of those Groucho Marx plastic-nose-moustache-and-eyeglasses things, I have no idea why they stare.

Are you sure it isn't just a cultural thing -- they stare at people and this makes Anglos uncomfortable?

Could be just a cultural thing. I know asian men can sit quite close to each other and even put their arms around each others shoulders. It's just cultural upbringing , but it makes many white hetro's uncomfortable.

What part of the country are you from? We have a ton of Hispanics in Chicago (and I went to college in AZ) and I have never felt anything like that.

Can't say i share in the experience. Of course, i live in a town with a large Hispanic population, so maybe i just am used to it. As for them doing it, i think it could be many things. Boredom perhaps. For the one below the poverty line like the day laborers, perhaps a feeling of envy or discomfort because some may feel that it isn't fair that they work themselves so hard and still struggle while you have a great job and home. Or perhaps one of many other reasons.

Possibly cultural, mostly anglo cultures see staring as impolite, but it may be different in others. If the groups are mostly young men, they may just be pureposefully impolite or trying to look tough.

Hmmm....
Maybe it's because you're looking at them in a hostile way, without even being aware of it?

A few questions. First, are they youths (teens or 20 somethings)? No matter what race, I find "packs" of youths tend to exhibit this same behavior. I bet I did it too. There is something about the youth+pack mentality whether you are white, black, japanese, mexican or a coyote.

Second, your statement "They usually have a disgustingly smug look on their face...." makes me tend to think you are predisposed to dislike Hispanics that you feel are illegal. If that is the case then you would be very surprised how subtle the body language you broadcast can be.

Third, have you tried that universal language called a smile? Seriously, it can lead to something you never expect. You have no idea how many times that has worked for me… here and all over the world. “Packs” of Brits, Italians, Japanese, and Mexicans have been either disarmed or even open to conversation by such a simple gesture. Even ended up in an invite to a home in Italy that was the best experience of food and family fun in my life (with that said never put yourself in a dangerous situation…. That led me to being mugged and beat up quite severally in Canada cause I thought “hell this is Canada what can go wrong?”)

Lastly, could some of the others be right and there is something about you that makes people look at you? No offense, I have been there too after a few rounds of “recreational pharmaceuticals”

I noticed this is your first post... I hope you don't disappear like many "one trick pony's" I have noticed here over the last six months. Not to say that you are one.

Sorry a last item... the best friend I ever had was first generation Mexican. The most caring, giving, welcoming family you would ever want to meet. Try giving all people a chance... might be one of the best things you do.

You probably look like an INS agent

or

They're looking to see if you caught them shoplifting

or

You just look suspicious or really creepy.

There is only one right answer and, yet, you still argue with me..

They are probably judging you because you aren't an illegal alien and they probably want to intimidate you. Mexican culture is largely based on males being in control and toughness is a big part of that, like one might expect from the alpha male in a lion pack. I suspect they are probably doing it on purpose. I've had many friends who have had to put up with latino gangs and families which try to intimidate white people, even to the point of stabbing whites who refuse to speak spanish to them. I would avoid them if I were you.

Now now, don't assume to much. I'd imagine they may get angry from the fact that people may stereotype them simply by the way they look. It can be quite frustrating.

Wait.
So is that because they're a gang or latino?

I'm sure all gangs are violently inclined.

I said gangs and families.
I am not trying to stereotype them I didn't say all latinos stare at people or intimidate people. I am simply saying they come form a male dominate and aggressive society. Again I will say it if the shoes fit wear them. I don't feel embarassed or afraid to say that I believe most of the stereotypes to true, because they usually are true. Each person can overcome sterotype by choosing not to act like their stereotype, however if they choose to act that way then they are responsible for being stereotyped, I am simple bothering to point it out and say it.
