As an ever-increasing number of mentally and physically wounded soldiers return to the United States from Iraq, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs faces a pressing crisis: women traumatized not only by combat but also by sexual assault and harassment from their fellow service members. Sadly, the department is failing to fully deal with this problem. Women make up some 15 percent of the U.S. active duty forces, and 11 percent of the soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nearly a third of female veterans say they were sexually assaulted or raped while in the military, and 71 percent to 90 percent say they were sexually harassed by the men with whom they served.

How can this be tolerated in a civilised society?

Seriously, given a group with that sort of sex ratio, little privacy and total isolation from their spouses, the...energy is going to build up. Why do you think so many priests turn into perverts? Why do you think it's been segregated for this long??? These people are trained to kill other people, political correctness comes a long second. This was always going to be the reality of having females in warzones. I'm sorry if that comes across badly, but the proof is in the pudding.

Unfortunately this kind of stuff dosen't happens only within the military, but also the places where military is suppose to "serve"...

"rape in his heart"?? what on earth does that mean. If anything, our animal instincts allow for every man to have the potential to be a rapist. All it takes is to get our minds back down to that base level of instincts, something the army and war is great at.

I'm not overly being biased but this is the kind of behavior to expect from servicemen, they are in the same league with van drivers, road workers,etc. Ofcourse most people with these jobs would never even do such a thing but this is where most of the sexual harassment charges will be at.

It's a large group of men in an overwhelmingly masculine profession populated by few women. You're guaranteed to get sexual crimes. Give me the same number of hotshot lawyers with some secretaries and the same thing will happen.

It means they would have to be capable of doing it in the first place. I don't know about you but it doesn't matter how long I haven't had sex, there is no way I am raping some one.

That is very demeaning of soldiers and untrue. Most soldiers are at least highschool graduates and many have very demanding jobs that involve many different skills. They don't just point and shoot.

Bullying rates are quite high in the army and education has nothing to do with manners, I know lots of working class people that are more polite than really rich people. I don't know, maybe you want to build a golden statue of the soldiers and start worshiping it...

Bullying rates? when you get to be an adult, generally the term bullying is no longer used.
