Sigmund Freud and gun control

This will sound ridiculous and I am posting this at 1 am so it may not make sense in the morning, but I think I had an epiphany.

...is it possible that guns are stand-in penises in some people's minds? Is this part of why conservatives get so mad about gun control and "gun-grabbing" liberals? Castration fear is sublimated into the argument, making friendly objective debate impossible.

This sort of thing underlies a lot of arguments. If I argue about religion I am trying to take away or replace your god which is a major mental anchoring point. Fear of loss of direction is sublimated into the debate. If I bash your favorite political figure I'm also bashing you because most people support somebody they identify with.

Some people also use an argument as a substitute penis by gaining self-worth by contemplating the power of their argument, and this is why a few people get extremely irate about random debate topics that have little relevance to everyday life. Basically, if you've ever come close to having a coronary about whether or not people walked on the moon you probably have a small penis.

lol, well, some people do get them to compensate for a little dick.

Really, I just wish gun control was a little more strict. There are plenty of people who shouldn't have guns. People who will shoot anyone who tries to take there guns is a group that shouldn't have them. Also, if acting in self defense, why have more than 1-2 guns?

That's why everyone else should have them, too.

You may need to arm your neighbors. I'd say, for defensive purposes, you only need as many guns as you have windows and doors.

Of course many use guns as assertions of their masculinity. Why shoot a 44 magnum when a good automatic or a more practical revolver will almost certainly fit your needs. But, then again, we do the same thing with cars, houses, even our own muscles. It's a natural symptom of masclinity to want to prove it.

Automatic, maybe revolver, shotgun, long gun, right there you have 3 or 4.

Haha, guns are meant to be symbols of masculinity, yes. I would completely agree with you if it had not been proven that cutting off a man's penis would not make him ifemminate. So I do not tend to link a penis to masculinity.

Anyone who has been in the Army is familiar with the refrain, "This is my weapon, this is my gun. One is for killing, one is for fun." Even the military understands, but doesn't stress, the relationship between firearms and genitalia.

Your penis is your symbol of virility and your tool of the trade, so to speak, however.

If guns were phallic symbols, no man would carry a 2" "snubby" or Kel-Tel P32. Tee-ninsey little things. The Kel-Tec's the size of a deck of cards, for God's sake. Phallic symbol...that's rich.

Do some guys "compensate" this way? Sure. However, since we're discussing this in Freudian terms, it'd do well to remember this quotation from Uncle Sigmund himself;

"The irrational fear of weapons is a sign of retarded emotional and sexual maturity."

It's also a good idea to recall that about 30% of shooters in the U.S. are female.

Obviously they serve other purposes, I doubt spec ops guys think of guns as compensating for their manhood, but I like the Freud quote.

If you read much Freud, you may soon be feeling sorry for yourself. However, I'm not so sure about this issue.

Some guys will use guns to compensate, simple as that.

"The irrational fear of weapons is a sign of retarded emotional and sexual maturity."
Sigmund Freud

Got this off Milton Bradley. Pretty applicable, no?

It depends on what you mean by "irrational fear." For example, if I'm a highschool student and a classmate brings a gun to class, I might be a little alarmed. "Sexual maturity" would have very little to do with it. In fact, regarding some people with guns, they might get some sexual gratification with them, at least in a "power" sort of way. Keep in mind that Freud, like virtually all philosophers, had some whackjob ideas.

Freud was also a brilliant psychologist, if a little unscientific in a lot of areas.

Hehehe, I had just stole if from the Dunedan, who posted that in this thread already.

You have to admit, the irony of that quote, vs. the threads original contention is quite humorous.
