Currency and the Blind

I was discussing this with my sister today. She was telling me how in some countries, their currency, bills included, has a different sized bill for each amount. They do this to help blind people tell what money they have and what they are paying. I was wondering why we don't do that in the U.S.

Opinions?

I've been wondering that for years. We're nearly alone in not doing this, and with all the recent redesigns of our currency, it would have been the ideal time to make it happen.

No doubt our failure to do this has something to do with objections from the vending machine lobby or similar.

The euro is designed for use by the blind. No problem.

The US could usefully start to end the confusion (for the non-blind) by making the bills different colours, which other countries have been doing for decades.

You have so much of it, that needs to be printed quickly, maybe thats why?
Our money in Australia is also multi coloured as well as different sized.

Heres Australian money.
Its very colourful and pretty.
Different sizes aswell you might notice.
The picture doesn't show it, but each of them has a clear window in the corner, with a white symbol on it.

On the $10 note the clear window has a windmill, and when you run your fingers over it, or look at it through the light you can see/feel wavy stripes (like wind).
The $5 note has the window (with a flower in it) but it hasn't got any indents on it.

I haven't got any other notes handy to check, but I think every note has different indents on the plastic window. I think this is for the blind, and to counter fraud.

Well you're a sheepdipper yourself. That does aid you in making your appraisal.

I checked the $20 note; and its window has '20' indented into it twice.

I can see currency being done away with eventually and everything being electronic. Your "money" would be accessible through some kind of card much like a credit card or maybe through a microchip implanted in the skin.

Why in the world would anybody wish that on themselves.

Clearly, I believe that is one of the last steps in the removal of all freedoms. If it ever comes to this, I'll be using precious metals ( lead, and copper ) to do my purchasing.
