Your Child Is Not State Property

Quote:
Rocked by a nationwide storm of criticism, the Los Angeles County court that declared homeschooling illegal in California has agreed to rehear the case in June. At issue is Justice H. Walter Croskey's Feb. 28 decree, which ordered the parents of "Rachel L." to send her away to a public or private school, where she can get a "legal education."

Justice Croskey's edict interpreted state education laws that govern all children, whatever their home situation and "whatever the quality" of their home education. Except for the rare case when parents already hold state teaching credentials, parents who find public schools intolerable and cannot locate or afford a suitable private school were branded by the decree as outlaws if they choose to instruct their child at home.

California legislators were entitled to enact this blanket prohibition, according to the judge, because they feared the supposed social disorder that would result from "allowing every person to make his own standards on matters of conduct in which society as a whole has important interests."

"Allowing"? By what right does government presume to "allow" (or, in this case, forbid) you to make your own standards concerning your child's education?

Wow... wow. It couldn't be made more obvious that independent thinking is discouraged.

Just another so called victory where people can instruct their child at home in the upbringing of the parents bigotry and hatreds. More creationist kids, and kids raised to hate minorities.

Yes a great victory in the name of independent thought.

I understand your point, but can't accept that state schools are better at curbing bigotry and hatred.
Why, the government is a reason we have "minority status" to begin with.

So you think you're Free... watch this space when it catches on..
Unfortunately we are all dictated to by those who think they know better... and of course it's always for the greater good...

Might be worth considering exactly what kind of world you'd like to bring your children into because I know for sure personally it ain't this one.

In the UK it's called giving People Choice ..... as long as you choose what's available in Reality and of course if You're rich enough to afford it.... Most aren't and never will be... So much for Choice

Please, please tell me your joking.

What on earth makes you think that homeschooling is necessary to instill bigotry and creationism in kids? That's easily done after school.

Either way I can see you are just one big proponent of the government controlling our lives in every facet for the "greater good".

Unfortunately, he's not joking. That is, until he won't be able to download Full Metal Alchemist episodes for free.

Keep in mind that Helio believes in the big government nanny state and believes the American Constitution is no longer relevant.

He isn't joking.

He thinks that kids need to be subjected to government indoctrination in public schools or, at the very least, private secular schools. He hates the idea of parents being the predominant influence on their children.
