Being the property of the public, they have the right to set limitations to make it accessible to all of the public by limiting some rights that may directly inhibit the rights of others who have legitimate business to conduct in public areas, such as courtrooms, etc. I am a smoker, and while I don't "like" not being able to smoke on public property, I can reasonably accept and understand that people with breathing problems can be directly affected and injured by cigarette smoke, but yet have every right to be on that property as I do, therefore the onus of responsible observance of individual rights requires that both are accomodated for by having seperate areas for smokers, TO SMOKE, but equal access to all facillities as anyone else while they aren't smoking on that property. *********** I would tend to agree with the first part, but that is not the case here in California. Public buildings just outlaw smoking all together we no area set aside for smokers, as least as a smoker I do not have to serve jury duty anymore. They are now trying to ban smoking from outside public parks. A private bar or resturant cannot permit smoking in their establishment even by setting aside a special area for smokers, the smoker must go outside and away form the doorway. They also want to ban smoking in any car or place where your own children might be inside of, making it unlawful to smoke around you own kids. The school system gives warnings to employees who have the smell of tobacco on their cloths, as they say that is offensive to other employees. Soon enough such laws will be effected in your state also. And so air space is not really owned by anyone, as the wind cannot be controlled by anyone and it blows whence ever it so wishes. Freedom is like trying to catch the wind. No longer possible, at least not in California. |

Freedom only lives where people have a spine and refuse to accept "no" for an answer, fighting it to the end, be it court or otherwise. I have made my choice, and will defend it. One effect calms you down, the other improves concentration and increases (relatively) energy levels. It makes you feel good. I agree with you though, the drawbacks definitely outweigh the benefits. |

![]() Serfin teh internets Location: Canada, eh? Posts: 140 | I think smoking is a habit. Some people today think it's cool. If one of my friends said that, I'd say "Yeah, like killing yourself is cool." It's just pointless if you want to smoke. You won't be able to enjoy pleasures you wish you got to do, like maybe skydiving, or maybe even win at a tournament of some sort! |><|><|Derek|><|><| Liek mah barbed wire? |

We can change the questions to.. why do you eat fast food 5 times a week? or Why do you drive aggressively.. people are willing to be self destructive for simple pleasures. Give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. Teach a man a religion, he will starve while praying for fish.

![]() Sedimentary Rock Location: York,UK Posts: 22 | Why? People do irrational things with their health and money daily and are not called to justify it Does that make them stupid too?. Why are smokers treated differently? Also tarring every smoker with the same brush is ignorant or at best a bad judgement. I personally Smoke for my own reasons and to be quite frank its no bodies business what i do with my life, i don't force you to stand next to me. I think people who are non-smokers really need to take a look at their own lives and see what could be affecting their own health before they start judging the ones of smokers. |

![]() Sedimentary Rock Location: York,UK Posts: 22 | I don't assume you care i can clearly tell you don't i'm mearly debating after all isn't that what this forums for? Even though your now saying you don't lable all smokers as 'dumb' when before in my eyes you where by saying that there all stupid, amounts to the same thing to me. Off topic - It's actually nice to come to a debate board where you actually get a real reply from someone instead of just no it's wrong. |

Saying that smoking is an unintelligent choice indicates an arrogant attitude which assumes that everyone should have the same priorities in life.
