I can't bear it anymore," he tells the men to tell their wives. "If he beats her, the beatings must be light and must not make her face ugly. "He must beat her where it will not leave marks. He should not beat her on the hand... He should beat her in some places where it will not cause any damage. In Ottumwa, Iowa, "It is unlawful for any male person, within the corporate limits of the (city), to wink at any female person with whom he is unacquainted."

In Los Angeles, you cannot bathe two babies in the same tub at the same time.

As you can see, there are plenty of stupid laws existing everywhere, not just in religions.... whether people practice those laws/rules is another thing.

That last bit is really the crux of the situation, though. The laws you cite really aren't practiced. But beating your wife is very common in the Muslim community. We look at laws like that and think they are silly. Muslim men look at the beating of their wives as not only a right but an allah-ordained obligation.

You only think it's common because of what you hear, much like how everybody still thinks seal hunters still hunt white coats.

What about the vast ammount of Christian families which have some parents who beat not only each other but the kids as well?

Children should be corrected. The manner in which this is done is a matter for a different argument. Wives are a totally different situation. Wives are generally just as capable as their husbands, with variation on both sides. No one should be "beaten". But wives shouldn't be corrected as if they were children either.

Furthermore, based on the fact that these people are talking out in the open about the best way to do it, I would think that the practice is fairly common.

And I'm sure if you dug hard enough there is something as a decent defense or punnishment for the man in some manner. And if not... then don't take up the faith. If they like it... who are you to argue?
