| Liberated thinker Location: New Mexican Alps Posts: 2,187 | I wonder is life a joke? Does anyone have to be funny to be erudite, perceptive, knowledgeable or otherwise successful? Sounds like it from the childish prattle I've been reading... sdbest? I was recently ranting about the idiocy displayed in the latest (so called) debate on Utube. Are we descending into the uninformed juvenile mental abyss where every issue has to be presented as funny or entertaining to catch the interest of the voters? I hope not or the nation is doomed to laugh itself to death! I hope that humor is not important to our nations business ? It's pretty hard to laugh when a bridge collapses or a Muslim decapitates a journalist. Mr Vicchio speaks with 'straight tongue'. Unfortunately IMNSHO he speaks to an uninformed, liberally subjective bunch of gullible believers who have been lulled into near insanity. Lulled by a bunch of propagandistic politicians and a sensation seeking press. The 'catch phrases' which are legion in the media, (dare I say among leftists) spread the insanity. How often have we seen/read the ,"Bush lied people died'",type comments. Eureeka! Bush didn't lie after all. But does it matter? It is a given in the advertising business that repetition sells. If we repeat the catch phrases or clever slogans often enough even mature people begin to believe them. Careful folks, remember newspapers are written on the 11 year old level so most reader can understand the story line? Are you too readers? Thus we play the fools with the time, and the spirits of the wise sit in the clouds and mock us. |

Watch an episode of Steal Ben Stein's Money, I think this'll illustrate my point pretty well. I completely disagree with the premise of this thread, Fox News beats the hell out of Comedy Central if you're looking for something to laugh about. As far as conservative comedians, Bill O'Reily is hilarious. "Iron rusts from disuse; water loses its purity from stagnation... even so does inaction sap the vigor of the mind. " - Da Vinci |

As a leftist myself, I have to concede that on the whole the rightwingers in Bern do 'outwit' the leftwingers, many of whom tend to be earnest to a fault. Shucks, if you can't have a bit of fun, what's the point? "I wish I was as cocksure of anything as Tom Macaulay is of everything." -- Viscount Melbourne |

They get money and sucess from ads BECAUSE they are successful with their audiences. You're completely reversing cause and effect. What kind of audience listens to a talk show radio host because he sells products well? EDIT: My mistake, thought by "product" you meant the products of advertisements, not the radio show itself.

Which do we find more amusing, truthful statements or fabricated idiocy? Jokes may work on the stage and in the media but beware of humor in international relations. Whom would you prefer for president, a joking liar who makes you laugh, or a serious logical person who gives you the unembellished truth? Life is not all a joking matter. Agreed a little levity helps but it doesn't solve national and international problems and disputes. Who wants to go over and joke with 'Ahwannajihad', Osama: and Hugo Chavez? ![]() Thus we play the fools with the time, and the spirits of the wise sit in the clouds and mock us.

Conservaticves, can too be funny, they spend most of their time making fun of liberals, it's just that most conservative politicians would die if they showed emotion and showbusiness has always been liberal except for, like john wayne. “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.” -Albert Einstein |

John Stewart at least is funny when he does it, and usually accurate. “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.” -Albert Einstein |

| King of Tacos Posts: 24 | Rush is funny, so there... I've made one example... and since I don't pay too much attention, I'm not sure about the others that Mr. Vicchio mentioned, but I'm a conservative, and plenty of people find me funny. Plus, I can acknowledge humor! For example, I find Ellis Weiner's name amusing. Case dismissed .---------- Who says that good words can't come from the mouth of a teenager? |

Because liberal audiences are less in need of hearing people reinforce their beliefs on a daily basis? Because liberal audiences would rather hear some variety in their entertainment? Because conservative audiences are more entertained by hearing people who disagree with them berated and slammed? Because conservative audiences are more apt to swallow blatant propaganda as fact? Because conservative audiences need reassurances that patriotism is loyalty to conservative ideals as opposed to country? Because conservatives are the more apt to forgive picking at the sores that keep the US divided as long as it promotes the conservative agenda? Just a few ideas off the top of my head.
