Man charged after ex-girlfriend set on fire

Quote:
GLACE BAY, N.S. — A man accused of a horrific attack in which his ex-girlfriend was set on fire has a history of violence against the 19-year-old woman.

Police say Gerald Anthony Mahoney, 23, poured gasoline on the woman’s legs and ignited it last Wednesday.

The two were alone in a garage at a home where a house party was underway at the time, and the woman ran outside and rolled on the ground to extinguish the fire, said Const. Gary Fraser of the Cape Breton Regional Police.

Fraser said she received extensive burns to both legs, and was listed in stable condition.

Fraser said when they spoke to the woman she told them Mahoney had also shot her in the right eye with a pellet gun in May. He said the woman received a superficial injury, but had not reported that incident before.

Mahoney has been charged with assault, aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm in connection with the incident last week. He has also been charged with assault with a weapon in relation to the incident in May.

He was denied bail Friday and will be back in court Monday in Sydney. Police said they intend to argue that Mahoney should be held in custody.
Where the hell do these people come from anyways? Who actually thinks they can get away with something like setting your girlfriend's legs on fire or shooting them in the eye with a pellet gun?

Bring back the Eye for an Eye laws, I say.

Sure it does.

We are not EforE\killing someone who is innocent, we are not taking someone's life or equal damage against their will, such as this person originally did.... these people have already proven disregard for their fellow citizen, therefore, why should we apply equal punishment and justice on those responsible?

True , they are not innocent... but as a matter of principal, to commit the same crime back upon that person is to lower ourself to that same level....
although i accept this issue is purely opinion and for the record i have not made my choice...

i would ask this

what about the clinically insane or mentally ill... if they commit murder, do we kill them? i vote send them into care...

Every case is always different, which is why a capital punnishment or eye for an eye method of justice would require absolute certainty and/or a repeated offender.

Stopping to their level? I don't see it as such, rather just reflecting a crime onto those who enacted it..... if they did not commit the crime in the first place, then they would not have to worry about the consiquences.

As for mentally challenged cases..... as above.... each situation would have to be determined case by case, as not all situations in life fall under the same end results.

I'm not saying to act this out blindly on everybody who does a crime that is similar..... the severity of the crime, the amount of victims, the amount repeated, the level of disregard for human life/safety, etc.... would all have to be accounted for, respectively.

I'm not saying kill all first time offenders, or mentally challenged people, just people such as the one here in this topic, where the person should be of an adult/sound mind, know the consiquences of their actions, and yet continue to disregard all this based on their personal desires in life.....

Not everybody deserves the same treatment based on situations. Hope that clarifies my stance. I'm all about compassion with tough love.

Considering she did not report it when he shot her in the eye, I would say that she is teaching him he can get away with it.

That would be asking for it, either buy a gun to make sure that if he does it again, it will be the last time he abuses anyone, or report it to the police.

Or the more common factor would be that she was fearful that things would escilate if she reported him in regards to being shot or left him.... only things did escilate and then she had no choice but to report.

That's one of the lamest excuses I have continually heard over the years "Oh, she was teaching him that he could get away with it.... Oh, she was asking for it." Cripes get your head out of the 40's will ya?
