| Mass'Debator | What is going on in Winnipeg? Violent weekend in Winnipeg with stabbings, shooting Quote:
A weekend of violence had police investigators scrambling in Winnipeg.
Five unrelated stabbings occurred across the city. Another incident in the downtown Exchange District led to police discharging a firearm and hitting a suspect.
It all started Friday night, when a man was stabbed in Transcona.
Police said two other men were stabbed early Saturday morning. Then two more were stabbed Saturday night.
Winnipeg Police Const. Jacqueline Chaput said the violence was unusual, but not unprecedented.
"I guess the violence is escalating. We're seeing that more and more often but to have this many in a weekend, in a couple of days, is definitely something that's unusual," Chaput said.
Early Saturday morning, police were involved in a shooting outside a club in the Exchange district.
Shots were fired in a parking lot and a police officer discharged his weapon.
Two men are in hospital. The officer has been placed on leave while the incident is being investigated.
While Winnipeg police continue to investigate this latest rash of violence, they have upped their patrols in the William Whyte neighbourhood.
That neighbourhood was the scene of three shootings in two days last Thursday and Friday, including two unrelated incidents the same day, a block apart, on Magnus Avenue.
The first shooting, early Thursday morning, claimed the life of 20-year-old Aaron James Nabess.
A 27-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Nabess's death.
More police to patrol North End neighbourhood
In response to the rash of violence, Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz announced a major crackdown on crime in the area Friday afternoon.
Standing beside acting police chief Menno Zacharias at City Hall Friday, Katz promised 12 additional police units will patrol the neighbourhood to respond to any suspicious activity.
"Zero tolerance," he said. "Anything that is untoward, anything that harbours on any type of criminal activity, anything that violates any bylaw, they will be acting on," he said.
The police street crimes unit will be assigned to the area for the foreseeable future, officials said.
"There are no deadlines of any kind. The idea is to go in there and make sure people feel safe, all right? To clean up some of the stuff that's going on," Katz said.
| Ok, I know I have reported some seriously violent crimes in Canada in the last while..... but I have noticed that the majority of them are coming from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
What's going on there? What's the cause of all this? It's crime rate has cirtianly spiked this year. |
