Gangster style shootings

I've always wondered, when a hit man takes someone out, why do they drop the gun right at the scene, or in a nearby trash can? Snipers never leave their weapons of course. But it seems only amatuers dispose of weapons later, like in a river. Why is that?

I'd like to thank Charlie Hodge, bringing me scarves and water.

So they don't get caught with the murder weapon. Trash can is usually smarter to keep anyone from picking it up and using against me...I mean him.

You answered your own question, they're amateurs. In the real world, a professional would only carry an untraceable weapon and would dispose of it in pieces nowhere near the crime scene.
In the movies and novels, it provides a means for the "bad guy" to eventually get caught and shown to be the killer. It's become a cliché.

When Michael Corleone killed the police captain in that Italian restaurant, he dropped the gun on the floor as he was leaving. It didn't matter 'cos the weapon was untraceable and of course no fingerprints were left on it.

They only use the gun to kill the targeted victim. Otherwise when on the run they can dodge thousands of bullets and use hand-to-hand combat skills to get away.

In the second movie, when Vito killed the don, he broke up the gun and disposed of it on the roof, down several pipes.

Compugasm are you purely looking at gangster related terminations?

Snipers are a recognised skilled group of modern policing and army tactics do not confuse their skills with the gangsters
