Iranian Justice! Scary!

Yea the Islamic regime of Iran are a bunch of pussy-cats. There would be nothing to fear from such an irrational and cruel regime. What are us Americans thinking?

Adulterer is immoral, but hardly a crime. See the bottom of the article for the other outrageous capital offenses.

Convicted Adulterer Stoned to Death in Iran
Tuesday, July 10, 2007

TEHRAN, Iran — In a rare confirmation, Iran on Tuesday said a man convicted of adultery was stoned to death last week in a village in the northern part of the country, Iran's judiciary spokesman said.

Jafar Kiani was stoned to death in Aghchekand village, 124 miles west of the capital, Tehran, on Thursday, Ali Reza Jamshidi told reporters. It was the first time in years that Iran has confirmed such an execution.

"This verdict was carried out Thursday," Jamshidi told reporters.

Death sentences are carried out in Iran after they are upheld by the Supreme Court. Under Iran's Islamic law, adultery is punishable by stoning.

Jamshidi didn't elaborate on how the stoning was carried out, but under Islamic rulings, a male convict is usually buried up to his waist while a female criminal is buried up to her neck with her hands also buried.

Those carrying out the verdict start throwing stones and rocks at the convict until he or she dies.

"Stoning is in clear violation of international law," Diaz said Tuesday in Geneva. He said Arbour considered stoning to be a form of cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment that is prohibited under an international treaty which Iran has signed.

The couple had reportedly been imprisoned for 11 years.

Capital offenses in Iran include murder, rape, armed robbery, apostasy, blasphemy, serious drug trafficking, adultery or prostitution, treason and espionage.

How much more repression do the Iranian people need?

Iran Wages War on 'Immoral' Cell Phone Messages
Monday, June 25, 2007

E-MAIL STORY PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION
Iran’s state telecommunications company is offering rewards to citizens who turn in their neighbors for sending or receiving “immoral” messages on their cell phones, according to a report in The News International.

"There are rewards for those who report senders of immoral multimedia messages to the judiciary," Vafa Ghaffarain, head of Iran's telecommunications company, was quoted as saying.

News of the rewards came as the Iranian government issued a press release stating it would try to monitor and censor the MMS (multimedia messaging service) material on all phones. MMS messages contain still images, audio, and video.

The ban stems from an order issued in April by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution that the Iranian Telecommunications Ministry must acquire technology for filtering multimedia messages, Foreign Policy magazine reported. The council reportedly said that the measure was necessary to prevent "immoral actions and social problems."

Iran already practices heavy censorship on Internet access, banning thousands of sites and blogs that contain sexual or politically controversial content, the News reports. Sites advocating women’s rights and social networking sites are also banned.

Woo woo woo, I never preached anything about a war with Iran! I am not for that, as I am against the continuance of the current war in Iraq. This thread is not about the brutality of the Iranian Regime. You have to admit, stoning (or really any type of corpal punishment) for deplorable.

What I cautioned to is that an Iranian threat to the US should be ignore; however, at this point war is not necessary.

Is that any different to discussions/criticism of Israel?

They have a different take on issues. China executed someone we'd just throw in prison. Turkey chops people's hands off for stealing.

Coincidentally, what is the crime rate in Turkey as opposed to the crime rate in the US? Perhaps their method is what humanity really needs.

That's begging the question. Why is it deplorable? Is the US war in Afghanistan deplorable? We were attacked and went to war in retaliation, effectively sentencing those who attacked us to death. Is corporal punishment ever acceptable?

OK, good. Glad I was reading you wrong...

But hell, no I don't admit that corporal punishment is wrong. I think people should be beaten for their crimes. Beat and Release! That's my motto!

Stoning? It's just another form of capital punishment. Nowhere near as cruel as crucifixion. Capital punishment for adultery is over the top, IMO, granted. But it's Biblical...

Indeed. Turkey not being run on Sharia law, I would be very surprised indeed. They certainly wouldn't be in discussions with the EU about admission if that was still happening...

I agree with that. There would be no discussion if they used brutality to enforce laws.

Hmm...I must have been watching too much Alladin recently. There is not much of a record of crime and punishment in Turkey, and I couldn't find much on the internet, so I withdraw the comment.
