Miss USA Takes A Fall

Yep. Our girl fell during the Miss Universe Pageant in Mexico City. To her credit, she recovered almost immediately. No thanks to the people who booed her throughout her stay in Mexico City and during the pageant itself!

If there was no such thing as a "beauty pagent", and someone suddenly in 2007 came up with the idea, do you think it would be allowed?

Because it objectifies women and turns them into swimsuit and evening gown ads.

It's precisely because they are marketable that I think the pageant will be allowed today.

Women are "marketable"?

Yep. Sad, but true. Beautiful women are amongst the most marketable commercial commodities in the world.

I don't. But that's the way it is (and has been for thousands of years).

But we digress...

Why do you think Miss USA received such hostile treatment in Mexico? I think it's jealousy. :)

I think she received hostile treatment because beauty pageants invite hostility: the women are generally hostile to each other, they are almost universally hostile to the general populace, and the pageants, with their idolization of shallow physical traits and their invitation to all to compare women based on those traits and declare winners and losers, create a generally hostile atmosphere. I'd boo pageant contestants, too -- the one I had as a student was one of the crappiest people I've ever known.

That being said, one thing I almost hate more than beauty pageants is the tendency of people to laugh at anyone who falls down. What are we, freaking monkeys? Why is this funny? Walking on two legs is hard, which is why most animals use more. Why do we take such pleasure in the humiliation of others?

Unfortunately, there are a lot of women out there who seem to think their largest valuable asset can only be within their physical looks. It makes me wonder how these women came to think this. Don't get me wrong, I like looking nice, but my life does not revolve around it.

I agree. I saw the little fall she took on CNN a few days ago. I felt very bad for her, in fact, I was happy for her that she picked herself back up and carried on like nothing had happened. I was very disappointed when they then showed her being booed. It just goes to show how shallow some people are.

I only asked the question because about 15 years ago in Utah, one town refused to send a contestant for the "Miss Utah" pagent, claiming it was "barbaricly sexist". One host at the talk radio station I worked for asked that question, and the calls got pretty interesting.

It's kind of like when I asked on another board "if no one ever heard of religion, or believed in any "supreme beings" What would the reaction be if someone suddenly brought up the idea? Most Christians refused to accept the question, and most "anti-religion" people said that person would be considered a loon.

Just fun questions.

Do you think the Mexican reation to Miss USA had anything to do with our immigration problems?

But the crowd singled out Miss USA for the hostile treatment....

Because Miss USA is an icon of America. I'm not saying this is the only reason why she got boo'd, but if you -heavily- disagreed with the actions of a particular country and they came to your nation and rose a flag in a crowd of fellow citizens, would you not be irked? Is Miss USA not, in some ways, little more than a nation's flag? Perhaps she's even worse; she, some would argue, represents the shallower side of a nation, showing what is deemed as perfection, something that the general populace can never have.

Mexican illegal immigrants are by far the largest group of illegals in the USA. And why do they flock to our shores in droves? Because the Mexican government is inept and fails to provide a good economic environment for its people to earn a decent living in their own homeland. And as if this wasn't enough, the Mexican government positively encourages its people to enter the USA illegally.

She is not a flag. She is a human being and she is a guest in a country which professes to accord hospitality to all participants in a competition which it applied to host. If Mexico hates America, don't take it out on the poor girl!

Before I respond, do you feel that Mexico's economic and political problems that promote border-hopping are, in part, a result of American economic and political policies?

No. Please don't blame America for everything bad which occurs in every poor nation in the world.
