It is called humane. If you have a person who is suffering cruelly, you force them to stay alive as long as possible regardless how much pain they are in or how horrible their quality of life is. To me that is decidedly inhumane.

It all boils down to selfishness. We want to keep the people we care about around as long as possible no matter what. Or religious people argue that "only god should decide when someone will die". I say grow a backbone and start making decisions on your own, not based on what a book tells you. Besides, if "god" doesn't really want someone to die, won't he keep them alive regardless of whether or not we try to put them out of their misery?

Quite agree. I cant help but think theres probably something more to it than simple selfishness, but I'm quite unclear abour it, far from sure.

Your point re God is good, and reminds me of that saying 'playing god'. Anyone who at any time 'plays god' is not in fact playing god, they are doing what humans have the ability to do, not something that is reserved for god only. The phrase is a nonsense concept. And in this case a convenient excuse.

Suicide is wrong only in that it hurts those still living. However, I think we have a right to die. It is, after all, our own life. Lkike it or not. Religions usually do not like it.

True - but then not doing it hurts the suicidal person.

Or does it? I guess in some cases people would go on to have a better worthwhile life, and in some theyd just suffer longer.

I think so too. While its certainly nice to consider others feelings, ultimately
a) it is optional
b) life and death decisions take precedence

I'm not afraid of death, I'm afraid of dying. Waste away in a old folks home, pull out a feeding tube and starve to death.... The acceptable methods of death seem more horrific than one of my own choosing.

It should only be allowed if it is a private, free amrket hospital. Public health care would encourage misuse of the practice and wrongful death. Look to Holland for examples of that.

Private business is every bit as bad.

Why must suicide occur in hospital? If I am to be permitted to suicide, why must I not choose to do it myself? Its not as if much medical expertise is needed.

I think anyone who successfully kills themselves should have to serve life in prison with no chance of paroll.
