Is there a relation between piracy and voter turnout?
In Internet piracy, people illegally download movies, music, etc. despite the lost opportunity for profits by the companies. Many know what they're doing will have that impact. But to them, it's just a small impact. They don't feel that they'd really make that much of a difference as a single individual, especially as a little young person in the huge world.
And in the privacy of their own homes, they have no really moving way of seeing all the other people who download the stuff at the same time; even if they did, like with a bittorrent, for instance, they wouldn't consider the activities to be of such big magnitude.
But who can blame them? These entertainment companies are already making billions, and most for particularly crappy products.
But at the same time, when voting days come by, is it possible that these same people have the same mentality? Do they believe that their decision would really have only negligible impact. I mean, what good is one vote, especially for third-parties, versus millions? There is low voter turnout in many countries, particularly in the West.
Now, let's not make this discussion one that's all about the ideals of democracy and such, and let's not exchange useless rhetoric on the power of the individual, freedom, etc. But really, do you see a relation here? Are people justified in thinking that what each one of them does doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things?
Also, the downloading pirates are often doing these activities to directly help themselves. In voting, on the other hand, it's an activity that helps their own countries more than it explicitly helps themselves. What do you think of that? Do you think that a solution to low voter turnout is to exploit people's selfishness, such as with the weird Votergasm program?
Does this relate in anyway to the significance (or lack of it) of human beings in this huge universe? How can this problem be solved? I mean, by all means, I haven't suggested any sort of causation here, just a correlation, i.e. downloading piracy, in my observation, doesn't cause lower voter turnout.
Is lower voter turnout a problem at all? Should "naturally" apathetic people even be cared about? Why have high voter turnout? Should people even vote then?
Ah, I realize many of my questions are heading slightly off topic, so just make sure to primarily respond to the main issue at hand.
