What does it say about a society that carries out show trials?

Stalin was a master at this genre of "justice." He created trials to bring retribution against those who opposed him, but they were never fair or impartial. The verdict was predetermined.

But totalitarian states aren't the only ones able to miscarry justice in this way. Republics descending into tyranny do it too. Opinion: American show trials

I wonder if those who support this Administration in its assault on fairness while claiming to be prosecuting terrorism will still think it's a good idea when a coming liberal regime in Washington pursues the same course against their little projects. :(
