Disney gets goofy for gays

Since Disney is an entertainment giant, I thought I'd post this here.

Once against it appears acceptance by society is dictated by economic considerations. Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great step forward in the lessening of restrictions on gays participating equally in social events. But I also realize that it's a desire to increase their income that really prompted this change in policy. It's nice to do something that's both progressive and profitable.
(It must really get on Fox's nerves to have to report this...)
Quote:
The Walt Disney Co. has changed its policy to allow same-sex couples to participate in a popular Fairy Tale Wedding program it runs mainly at its two U.S. resorts and cruise line, a Disney spokesman said on Thursday.

Disney previously allowed gay couples to organize their own weddings or commitment ceremonies at rented meeting rooms at the resorts, but had barred them from purchasing its Fairy Tale Wedding package and holding the event at locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World set aside specifically for weddings.

"We are updating our Fairy Tale Wedding guidelines to include commitment ceremonies," Disney Parks and Resorts spokesman Donn Walker said. "This is consistent with our policy of creating a welcoming, respectful and inclusive environment for all of our guests."

Walker said the change was prompted by "an inquiry from a guest that asked about this service."

Disney had allowed gay couples to take part in its vow renewals program but excluded them from buying wedding packages by requiring a valid marriage license from California or Florida, which do not permit or recognize gay marriages.

Disney's Fairy Tale Wedding packages start at $8,000 and include a wedding planner, the ceremony, food and beverages, flowers and table decorations.

The Lavish Wedding Option also includes a ride to the ceremony in the Cinderella coach, costumed trumpeters heralding the couple's arrival, and attendance by Mickey and Minnie Mouse characters dressed in formal attire. (Ish: OMG, the queens are gonna love this!)

Disney has come under fire from religious conservatives, including the Southern Baptist Convention, who have accused the company of promoting a gay agenda.(Ish: Yeah, now every little girl and boy will want to become Mousekaqueers. Aren't Mickey and Goofy gay enough? Donald and his nephews? Sure, nothing weird about that.)

"We are not in the business of making judgments about the lifestyle of our guests. We are in the hospitality business and our parks and resorts are open to everyone," Walker said.

Well, Disney hasn't exactly been all that (comparatively) hostile to homosexuality. As a matter of fact, they've had "gay week" for several years. Back eons ago when I was still in high school, our band went to Disney World. The first day that we were there (our water park day) happened to be the last day of Gay Week. Seeing overweight dudes in speedos frenching was a real culture shock for us kids from Houston (by gosh) Texas.

What is sacred about cartoon characters wearing shirts, but no pants? Or jackets but no shirts? You call it sacred, I say freakish and weird.

I was just thinking the same thing, but then I thought about all the women I know who still run around really believing the messages of Disney Movies.

What makes a man turn neutral? Lust for gold? Power? Or were you just born with a heart full of neutrality?

I'm just waiting for the the latest Disney remake of Sleeping Beauty when the Princess' lesbian lover wakes her up from her 100-year slumber with a lesbian kiss.

(How's that for tolerance, folks?)

Well *scratches head* the thing is that most Disney stuff doesn't really go that far into the territory of sexuality. The movies are usually remakes of classic stories and most of these are decidedly heterosexual. If you're waiting for a Disney cartoon that you can take home to the kids that has a homosexual message, don't hold your breath. It's not antagonism. It's just the market.

She's a stereotypical mermaid. Looks like practically every image of a mermaid you've ever seen.

I find it amusing that you say so...when anime girls are ten thousand times worse. I love anime, but those girls defy the laws of physics.
