Should the FBI/Police ect. investigate if someone made the following statement?:

"I'm going to go on a killing spree, and I'm going to start with myself."

I'm not sure, but I think it is so absurd that it is an obvious joke.

Anybody think I'm wrong?

If the FBI investigated everything like that, even if every citizen worked for the FBI they wouldnt be able to keep up.

A good spree should last hours. A suicide bombing happens to fast to be a spree.

...Why? First of the need something they would have to need something to substantiate that in order to deem that person a threat (a past record or somesuch). Also if a such a person said that who was serious (and not joking which seems implied) they would likely be placed in protective custody by the state for a mental analysis.

Well, if the person is showing other signs of actually fullfiling that or something else, yes. But if it's an OBVIOUS joke, then no but they should be spoken to about how it isn't funny etc.

It is my understanding (from a couple of agents I know) that the FBI will investigate certain vocal statements that they deem credible.

If someone said they were going to kill say, a local politician because he/she did ......, and this was reported, more than likely the local law enforcement agency and the FBI would show up.

Now if some said they were going to kill the president, vice-president, etc., and this was reported, they would have the FBI and the Secret Service at their front door.

In this day-and-age with the terrorist environment and threat we have to live with, things are going to be more sensative that normal.

So, I say, if the FBI has a credible reason to investigate - Yes.

Well, when the dood says he's going to start by killing himself, do we automatically know he means that literally? Perhaps he means he's going to kill off who he was, his old self, in order to become some new Scourge of Gawd. After all, as we've all chuckled about, how could he kill anyone else if he's already killed himself? It's impossible, therefore why would he say it? The answer should be that either he's so nuts he doesn't know what he's saying or he means something else that he hasn't made clear.

Why assume the former if the latter is possible?
