Just out of interest, do you support the use of human stem cells for research in neurological diseases?

Yes, I do. Personally, I find it atrocious that people who are "Pro-Life" are more concerned with the "rights" of already aborted fetuses than they are in consideration of the hundreds of thousands of lives in this country struggling from day to day with dehabilitating neurological diseases. There have already been some major breakthroughs in treating rodents with similar neurological disorders as a result of stem cell research.

The way I see it, whether people are for or against abortion, it is here to stay for some time in this country. Why should we not make the better of those deaths by bringing life to others? The logic is fallacious to me... I just cannot comprehend how anyone could be against such medical progression and potential...

It's a shame that usually it takes a personal infliction (not refering your family specifically) for people to see that the research is justified. People want miracles but are afraid of the sacrifices and compromises they have to make. Alas I'm studying science so it makes me biased to begin with and obviously you're driven personal affliction. UK now has the world's first Stem cell bank, although I doubt the US would be willing to fund for one...

Of course, morality plays a large part in this and the argument can be turned but we'll leave that to another thread.

Waychel:

I'm very sorry to hear about your father's illness, and I wish you all the best under the circumstances. I admire your unselfish committment to your father. Your time will come, and I wish you much success regardless of what profession you choose.

Waychel & Pooeypants:

Although I am pro-life, I do feel that stem-cell research if properly approched can be very beneficial. As with anything, changes can be made, and as I suspect the growing support for this research will become effective enough the law will be changed.

You're going to have to specify a little more when you say "properly" approached, so far, I haven't heard of any uses for Stem cell research other than medical progression.

If I am not mistaken, there is something else they wanted to do that caused the uproar. I'll have to check.

Regarding the stem cell research thread.

If the fetus has been aborted or if there is a stillbirth and the parents consent to it, I do not see why we can use the lifeless body that is left for research.

We condone organ donorship for saving lives. If a consent is signed, why not???????? This too can lead to the saving of lives.

I wish you and your dad the best Rachel. I hope the research can be done in a timely fashion for your dad.

Is there a stem cell thread? If so, this conversation should move there. If not, perhaps you'd like to make one instead of hijacking this one (please and thank you&#33 :-)

Sorry for the typo, I meant to say..

"...I do not see why we can't use...."

Thanks Mia, I will look to see if one has been started already.

I thought this thread was "GETTING TO KNOW YOU", or am I as you like to point out mistaken???

Waychell introduced herself by discussing and extremely difficult part of her personal life. That showed personal courage, which I am not sure you understand. And in so doing did not "hijack" this thread. Talking about oneself and having others respond, if I'm not mistaken is an acceptable way of people "Getting to know you" isn't it.????? :)) :))

Take something to calm yourself down, PO. The discussion started to move forward into the topic in general. I asked politely.

I think it's important and interesting and deserves a whole thread.

I'm sorry that as a moderator you cannot follow the etiquette yourself, much less help other people to.

This will be the last time I respond to you. Please do not take my silence as agreeing with anything you say or finding myself lacking the answer.

Have a nice day.

I am perfectly calm, I have my coffee and cigarettes, and some very nice music playing.

However, I just find it so interesting how you easily critize so many others, and balk when something is said to you. Hmmmmmmmmmm

I too support research using stem cells from fetus'. I asked a rabid pro-lifer once why she was against stem cell research. She said that women could become pregnant simply for the purpose of aborting the pregnancy in order to sell the fetus to a R&D facility for stem cell research.
Do ya think these people are kinda knee jerkish?
Personally, I find little difference between the zealots on the right end of the arbitrary political spectrum, and the left. Both groups think with their glands, become emotional in a debate and tenaciously cling to their patented verbage despite any evidence to the contrary.

And when they fall prey to debilitating neurological diseases, I wonder if those so called "pro lifers" would turn to for healing...
