Now I bring this up because the wife was reading a thread on the Something Awful forums, in it some kid is shown taking out a raccoon and a bunch of posters started saying he was wrong, and the game warden would come for him.

Whatever.

Killing Varmints on private property is Fine By Me. When I was staying on my Aunt and Uncles ranch, we had a problem, their cat, who lived out side was looking sick. We all thought he was dying. My wife and I moved into their old house and it took like 2 nights to figure out what was going on. Raccoons and possums were eating his food.

I tried various methods of feeding the cat, wasn't working, tried to scare them off... in the end, I killed 5 raccoons, and 2 possums with my .22.

I did the right thing, plain and simple. These varmints were not only a threat to the cat, they were tearing up the roofing, and trash, yet I have had people scream at me for being "Cruel to animals" Please, these were all one shot, one kill take downs. I didn't torture them, I didn't trap them, I didn't cause undo pain and anguish.

I don't see any problem with keeping possibly rabid animals in check. Nor do I see a problem with the poulatiopn control on one's own property. I didn't see the video you make reference to here, but if the kid was purposely torturing or doing cruel and unusal things to the animal, I say it is wrong and the kid should be prosecuted under the law, if there are any laws covering what he was doing on the video.

There are no laws, and his first shot took the coon's front leg off. Their argument was that no one has the right to kill animals like that.

If there are no laws, then there is no crime. It is best left to the individual to decide what is right or wrong.

I mean...where are we s'posed to draw the line?

A blasted pair of coyotes will lure your dog into a game and then kill and eat her. I'll shoot their ass first.

And 'coons and 'possums are okay unless they start to scavenge in the garbage and make a mess. I don't go looking for them, but if they mess with my pets or livestock, feral animals get a bullet.

I will give a dog a break, even if he is on my property. I can usually find the owner and return him, but if I can't, I take him to the pound....

I think it's best to try and deal with them without killing them first, as you certainly tried to do. Perhaps by killing varmints that love cat food, you are in essence breeding varmints that hate cat food.

Go ahead and kill varmints. If you misfire and take out the critter's leg, make sure the next shot kills him. Now if that same kid shoots the thing in the leg and laughs and just walks away.... well thats pretty messed up.

Question is if its a young kid, I'd go all the way up to 10 before I'd say prosecute him. Prosecuting a young kid for being cruel is exactly why our courts are so backed up. If you catch your kids being cruel to animals, punish them.

He finished the job, yeah he was young enough to be "WOAH LOOK AT THAT" over blowing off the leg, but he did the right thing and took the critter out.

That was just wrong...you should have killed the cat!

I'm not too fond of baked possum and their hides are worth about only a buck. The coon skin is worth considerably more, probably at least 15 dollars, if not more...and barbeque coon isn't too bad.

But cat reminds me of the Everlasting Gobstopper...the more you chew, the bigger it gets. It's about like owl.

The solution? Get some dogs and feed the cat(s) to them. They will also keep the coons and possums out of your yard.

Our cats keep alot of vermin out of our house, and we haven't seen a mole since they arrived. The squirrils avoid the porch (and the apolstery of the porch chairs).

Not obnly that they are a great source of entertainment. Quieter than dogs and much cheaper to feed. I f we had a bigger place, we'd probably have a dog or two as well.
