So what's it all about? The show is into it's third week here in Oz, and although I wasn't interested in it, it's being repeated every Sunday afternoon, so I caught the first episode. I found it boring, predictable and extremely unfunny......but, it's the whole phenomenem that's got me wondering. I don't know what it's like in the US, but here the hype is inescapable, whether you watch the show or not. We already have magazines and TV stations looking for Australia's 'Ugly Betty'. If the star of the show really was an ugly person, I could understand it, but she's not. She's a rather attractive woman who plays an ugly character. Everyone else in the series is 'beautiful' (in the 2007 context of the word) and bitchy, even the blokes. Betty seems to be the only one with a heart.
I realise the not-so-subtle message is 'looks aren't everything', but I'm interested to hear from the male of the species about it all. How will you feel if we end up with beautiful women dressing down so they can look ugly too?
I honestly believe that even the most beautiful person soon turns ugly if they have an ugly demeanor, and vice versa - ugly people become really attractive if they display an attractive demeanor. Maybe when we see an ugly personality emerging, we start noticing physical faults as well. But that's the real world - how do we deal with it when it's dished up to us on our TV screens?
