Online social networking

I see that several members here are also members of one or more online social networks, as am I. Mostly due to the urging of friends also on these networks, I have a page at Orkut, MySpace, Friendster and Hi5. I rarely visit or update them, and so far they've served no useful purpose.

So I'm curious about what sites you might belong to, whether you consider them worthwhile or not, and if they've produced tangible results for you.

I've read that some web pundits consider this the age of social networking. I don't see much evidence of this, do you?

what's my position on something anything? (rhetorical)

you know, the pundits are right on this one. They act like it's a revelation. Your post just articulates what we already know. Some would think it just networks the sheeple so they know to all run off the cliff at the same time (hows that for straw?). In reality it is a tool that can be weilded positively. Of course for every action there is an equal...

I say they are all just government information gathering techniques. They'll record anything you are willing to divulge about yourself, and retain it for all time.

Then see how well your Fifth Amendment serves you.

I tried something called Meebo, which allows someone to send you instant messages through an instant message window on webpages you put it on. It's a pretty cool idea, but mostly spam messages so I don't use it anymore.

Myspace is for newbies and corporate marketing, so I avoid those too. I find it depressing that TV characters like "Jack Bauer" have their own myspace pages and blogs, but Keifer Southerland doesn't.

Isn't this social networking?

A collective of people, with an interest in debate, networking together?

Not like myspace or youtube but this still holds social and networking premises to be considered actual social networking.

It is - at least for the 20- demographic. It's gotten to the point where I don't ask if they have a myspace, I just ask them for their myspace username.

Myspace is beyond big for a lot of age groups. At my highschool.. "exchanging phone numbers" has been replaced by "exchanging myspaces."

And if you think about it.. a myspace or w/e is a lot better than a phone number too.. it let's you get to know the person without having to really try very hard. Plus, it's a courteous way to let someone who's hitting on you know you have a spouse (it shows relationship status on myspaces).

Powerful.. magical.. e-e-e-eevil..

Wow, that is pretty amazing. A few years ago, as a joke, I had business cards printed with my website address on it. Plain white card, black letters, nothing else. It was kind of funny to most people, and now you say something similar is pretty common.

I'll go you one better. I have a polo shirt with my website URL embroidered on it. (Anything for attention, eh?)

I have a myspace that I use mostly for keeping in touch with friends and family, as they are scattered throughout the US and Canada. It's also useful to be able to link to a blog I wrote instead of typing the same thing over and over.

I have a myspace only for the sake of having a profile.

I try to not make any connection between that and my personal blog at blogspot.

I Really LOVE flickr and Last.fm Which is something I only just recently joined. Being a music junkie -it was something I should have joined from a long time ago. I actually did join them prior to a merger, it was called audioscrobbler or something similar.

Anyway its excellent! I rarely ever listen to the streaming songs, -it hogs bandwidth, However whenever I am at my desk here at home, I listen to music, and this allows me to share what I am listening to. Its a great service. I also can see who listens to the same music.

A buddy of mine swears he saw a Volconvo logo on some dude's t-shirt. He can't remember where. either in Ohio or near Maryland. He saw the logo over my shoulder on the monitor while sitting at my house and was all "hey!" what're you looking at? I said Volconvo like I been telling y'all about for a while! hmm

I'd like a shirt. black with orange white and a little globe. Can I buy a shirt?
